Engine noise, s70 1999
Pls help id this sound, diesel like “clunking”, freqency similar to the engine rpm.
i suspect power steering pump, but not the usual whinnying noise. Turning steering dont affect the freq of sound or loudness. screw driver hearing probe to the pump appears to close the clicking freq. but not sure. Thks for helping https://share.icloud.com/photos/0c10ae_W97_5ZJv362v5HwJ7g.
Update:
I removed the serpentine belt, and the noise went away. However none of the tensioner pulley, power steering, compressor or alternator pulleys appeared to be wobbly or made any unusal noise. Since the tensioner pulley is a stand-alone unit. I decided to pull it out. The bearing seems ok ie no run out or woobly. I ordered a new to test it out.

Does the sound follow then motor fire up? Is it just recognizable on inactive? Your commotion can be everything from terrible o-rings on the oil get to a well used water driven lifter. Your motor was one of the last volvos with pressure driven lifters, I figure the change to mechanical came in 2000 or 2001. I was perused your other string with the 5W20, By and by I could never allow such oil to approach that motor. Normal oil for those motors are 0W40 or 5W40.
