engine staggers, faulty ECU ?
Hello everyone. My family has been proud Volvo owners ever since my first ownership back in 1980 of a 74 164E, a car ahead of it's time. I wore it out. My wife owns a 98 S70 that has 135K miles and until last week had run great. It cut off on her one afternoon home from work and then "coughed" on the restart failing to start. She waited 10 minutes, reatarted ... engine coughed then the RPM ran to 5K before it idled back and started coughing. It took three attempts for her to get it home.
I discovered that the plugs, wires, cap and rotor were all original so I replaced everything with OEM spec items, also the plugs. On restart ... the same problem. All fuses checked out OK. I pulled the newly installed plugs and found black fowling and I could smell raw gas. I also noticed that when the ignition was initally turned on, I did not hear the fuel pump powering up before turning further to crank the engine. Starter and battery are fine.
Culprits? Could it be a bad fuel pump/fuel filter? Perhaps a faulty ECU?

RE: engine staggers, faulty ECU ?
THANKS ...
I indeed have an OBDII code reader, I checked the computer and zeroed it out before atttempting the restart and it does not show any faults now. I do not have a "repair manual" so I have no idea where the mass air flow sensor is. I plan to work on it some more this afternoon and will try to find the MAF. Her old 240 had a MAF problem and when we replaced it, problem solved.
