Default Hi pitch noise from the engine (air assist?)

I have Volvo S70 1998. For a long time there was an hi pitch noise from the engine (air assist?).
I could not find the noise source, it stopped after a short time, and stated again for a short time.
There is no noise any more.
If it is the air assist pump, what is the function of the air assist pump and where is it located?
Thanks

The Air pump is under the car on the left side. Like below the battery tray. There is also a cruise control motor under there. But the pump is lower than the cruise motor.

It only comes on for about 1 minute or so.
It directs warm air from the exhaust into the engine to help the engine heat up faster.
