Default How to replace 1998 S70-T5 Ignition Assembly?

Hello Tech & Everyone,

I just bought a used 1998 S70-T5 Volvo. I had a little difficulty to remove the key from the ignition. I took the car to a shop. A mechanic told me that the ignition assembly is going bad, and it would cost approximately $600 to replace the assembly. For now I can get the key out if I push the transmission stick forward a little bit. Eventually I would have to replace the ignition assembly. My questions are:

1. if it is difficult to replace the ignition assembly.
2. if I should even try do it myself. I am trying to save some money, so I am learning to fix car myself if I could.
3. if you think I should do it myself, please give me instruction or guideline.
4. Please tell me what to buy and where to buy the part for this work.

Also, I would like to change the oil myself too. Please tell me:
1. What oil and filter type I should buy (please recommend brand name)
2. Where to buy these part cheap and reliable.

Thank you very much for your help,
Khoa Nguyen.

2 things to look at before the ignition.

1.If the shifter **** is going bad it will make the key stick in the ignition. Look at the top of the button you push to get the shifter to move. Is it broken at the swivel point? If it is it might be sticking and not releasing causing the key to stick.

2. Have you pushed the shiftlock over ride button lately?
If you have and it is sticking it will do the same thing.

As for oil filter I would buy Volvo ones. Oil I would use a Good 10-30 oil.

Thank you very much, Tech. I have check what you have suggested. You are right.

I noticed that the bottom of the shifter **** has some chip, & it does not release sometime at Park or even Drive. As I mentioned in the previous post. If I push it forward a bit, the **** will release and I would be able to get the key out.

So what would you suggest me to do please?

Thanks again,
Khoa

Is it the button you push to move it into gear?
Or is it the shiftlock overide?

I think only the Dealer or E-bay.

Turn the Clip in the boot at the bottom of the shiftknob to release the boot.
Set parking brake. Put shifter in Neutral and Pull on the **** really hard and it will come off.
