Default New 98 s70 GLT project

Hello, all pretty much first post on here other then my introduction!

i have done plenty of research on this year and model and it seems to be the best for the price.

i spent 1500 on my s70, and plan on puttin about that much back into it over the next year or so.

I would love someone to point me in the right direction in general maintenance.

t belt is most likely first, but i wanna do repairs efficiently, if im taking something out, that allows me to work on 3 other things id love to know when i can do that!

the miles on the car are just shy of 200k, regular maintenance by the owner.

all it needs is some cosmetic loving, and some basic maintenance!

thats not my license plate number either so its all good

Read the "New 850 Owner" thread in the 850 section. That will do you well.

So today was the first real day of driving it on the highway.

around 65-70 it starts to have quite an interesting shake/vibration

after some research its either the wheels need to be balanced or my drive shafts bouncing,

but its not like VIOLENT, but it causes my speedometer console to like bounce around very loudly and that's when i realized the housing for the speedo isnt attached to the dashboard!

so i definetly need an easy fix that hopefully doesn't involve removing the entire dash.

also im going in on tomorrow for an alignment and balancing to see if that fixes the issue.

NO the frix only involves removing the upper dash pad (its easier that way its possable without removing the pad, just need to have the right set-ups.)

I would bet wheels and tires out of balance or flat spotted.

fixed the dash, new wipers and head lights.

so far so good.

the left side was the worst, the dash actually was missing the piece, used some epoxy and super glue to get the hold tight.

in the pictures you can tell which ones more broken lol

so this weekend is fix up/ get tools weekend.

but anyways,

This last week, when the car starts up and starts driving, it begins making a wierd whining sound.

not like what ive heard and seen online so far though.

as it goes away after like 4-5 seconds, almost sounds like a pump having a hard time or something.

and when i go about 90% full turn, the wheels makes a cranking noise like the power steering fluid is low, but not sure what type to add.

as i think powersteering fluid is red

both ways, and it almost seems like me powersteering is having a problem, and when i went to walmart today i checked my fluids and everything looked fine.

checked under the car, and there was a TINY leak on the front left side right next to the bottom of the radiator.

and theses friggin volvo dipsticks and measurement pieces are hard as hell to read.

BUT i shalll prevail on the weekend!

Do you have an owners manual? If not read the New Volvo Owners thread in the General Chat section. There is a link to the online owners manual to tell you what kind of fluids you need.

Also, what kind of fluid is leaking near the front? If it's coolant, you may be about to blow a radiator hose or a radiator. Either way, you don't want to play with coolant leaks, they usually win (and you loose big time).

Good job on your cluster repair.

Great buy !! I paid $3900 for a 2000 with half the mileage.....what drove me nuts was the very poor headlights. I found brand new OEM-style TYC's with glass lens, albeit the cross-hatched fresnel-type that diffuse the beams, for $85-$100 apiece vs. $350 for each assembly from Dealer. I opted to spend $325 for a pair of Projector Lenses, and 55w bulbs vs. 35w OEM. Didn't go to 100w; that might require new wiring for the addit'l. heat.
Happy motoring !

ok, so today we are having problems with the volvo.

lately the can seems to be running wierd, and today it died on me like it was out of gas.

ive read online it may be the fuel pump relay or fuse, or the actual fuel pump has died.

it just happened and i had to walk back home to grab my gas can and other car. so im going back now to diagnose it.

ive also read it could be the maf.

and ive seen that unplugging it can make it start but im not sure if i want to drive it with it unplugged

If i get it running im gonna have the codes read at a local shop or autozone.

if it doesnt start, getting it towed to my house and gonna head up to u pull and pay and grab parts i need for half the price.

lets hope its just out of gas!

okay so this weekend is supposed to be warm, and the volvo has started to make some funky noise and is just running poorly id say.

i feel it needs a pcv replacement and timing belt tensioner and maybe water pump.

i also think i have a rad leak somewhere causing a sweet smell when i drive and sit idling for a while.

so today is research day on my issues, i will have a video of the noise im talking about.

but some info; when i put the key in and just turn electronics on the noise starts, its a low hum but i know it isnt good.

all my fluids are topped off, but i feel its a pump failing or something i just cant tell.

also my ABS lights come on every know and then but i think thats because it needs new brake pads

so i think the sound is coming from a malfunctioning secondary air pump, as i put my ear up to the filter and it sounded AWFUL, and the whine seems to be coming from under the battery thought the alarm was busted but did nothing with removal of the fuses and such.

when someone chimes in ill grab a video of the sound

I had my water pump and serpentine belt replaced along with Timing Belt. Also, OEM Brake Pads, reman Calipers and new brake lines all around. Going to Akebono pads next time. Did all shocks, struts, and spring seats too.
Had peculiar intermittent ETS light issue; runs worse when ETS light is off...??? Codes not giving definitive answer.
Finally just made the $500 Throttle Body decision. Found Xemodex to be way helpful in explaining codes; their Tech Support was quite competent and pleasant. Dealing with the damn Fan Shroud the only difficult part of replacement.
Hey !!! They deal in ABS modules too; give 'em a call; they can also help you figger out what you problem really is.
I would swear that all accelerator pedal response has improved quite noticibly at all speeds and conditions. Nimble as she was, given the oversize tires I put for ride comfort, I now find that transition to turbo boost, when requested by foot, has smoothed out very nicely too.
Volvo. Not just great transportation. It's a hobby too.

Turned out to be the headlight wiper motor died. And would just turn over on itself which I never thought would happen that way.

But could of been worse. Sure as hell not replacing that dumb motor.
