I am looking at purchasing a 2000 s70
Only has 44,000 miles on it, leather fully loaded non turbo, automatic, $4600 OBO
I tried looking some things on these but couldn't find a lot.

I am looking at using as part time commuter, possibly giving to 13 year old in a few years.

Are there lots of issues with this model? I see other 2000 model years had some troubles

Is maintenenece expensive? I'm not a mechanic at all, i can do small stuff

Any help much appreciated thanks

Welcome to the forum. As with any 15 year old car, low mileage is less important than knowing the maintenance history. Did the prior owner keep good records? Did you look at a carfax history (dealer servicing will show up there)? Keep in mind when you read these boards, you are looking at people who are doing repairs themselves or want to understand a problem with their car - (you don't hear about somebody who's car is fault free on a forum :-) ) There's a good sticky on the 850 board for a new buyer's check list. Many of those points are valid for the S70s - ie when was the timing belt last done? does the AC blow cold and stay cold? etc. The bigger problem areas on the S70s have to do with the "drive by wire" ETM (electronic throttle module) which can go wonky when they get dirty and that the S70s also use coil packs which can need replacing after a while (most posters suggest 100K miles). There are some who have complained about transmission shifting problems - tough to say if that's a minority, but many look to flush the transmission fluid every 50-75K as preventative maintenance (even though Volvo says its a lifetime fluid). To note, most of the 2WD Volvo transmissions are Aisen's - same as Toyota uses. Depending on where you live, you should be able to find an independent mechanic to do routine work. Parts are easy to find, many are shared with other models but I wouldn't say these cars are the cheapest to maintain but I don't think they are overly expensive either.. (BTW, I own an 850 and a S40 and do most of my own work when I have the time or its not too cold).
