Default New Volvo S70 owner needs info!!

Needs some info please. I just got a 99 s70 that is awd. I believe the angle gear is shot in it. How hard is it to change? and is there a way I can disconnect the system so it's just fwd? I've dont that before in an older audi. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jim

Exactly what is the problem?

The driveshafts are known to go bad. You can remove the driveshaft and only run FWD if that is bad. If the angle gear is bad you can remove that and the driveshaft and run FWD.

i turned the wheel and put it in reverse. seems liked the right rear wheel was kinda locked and there was a nasty crunhing noise coming from the back. i assumed it was the angle gear before I knew it was in the front of the car. i am coming from an audi and it acted like when i had the switch in position 2 that locks the rear end.

I would inspect it still might be the driveshaft. I would remove it and then see if it still does it.

Ok driveshaft removed....actually driveshaft isn't that old. It's not rusty and the stickers from the dealer are still on it. The noise and crunching is still there but very very subtle. Does this mean the rear diff is toast?

hi , sounds familier , i had a crunching sound when reversing , thought it was the prop ,(i used to make these for a living and got a favour priced replacement £380) using my own splined stubends. turned out it could still be the transfer gear , wich is a common faulty part on early awd , and one hell of a job to replace . so i took the new propshaft off and still got a deep rumble and occelating grone from the back end (diff) especially when de-cellerating ,on inspection the output bearings from the diff had 2-3mm of play where the drive shafts plug into it . even with the prop off , if still got to get two rear drive shafts and cut the stub ends comlete with abs rings (the castlated rings) attached so i can stop driving the diff with the drive/halfshafts from the rear wheels. the whole stub must be on to hold the hubs together. luckly iv'e still got the entire front end off ,steering rack/strut top bearings/tie rods/wheelbearing/anti rollbar/brake discs to replace so i dont have to worry about the back end at the moment !lol.
my locol volvo dealer in bedford uk gave me a verbal quote for the transfer gear of £1600 and £850 for the diff refurb and £1200 for the steering rack , wich i got quoted £160 mail order although i havent orderd it yet because i gave myself a double hernia stripping my 2 yr old 1999 v70awd 2.5 t xc and cant even take the wieght of a full kettle yet ! are you getting the picture? i i paid £3750 for it and it drove like a dream untill i towed my caravan. i think when ive repaired it ill be looking at about £800 worth of 2wd car on my drive .lol
Daren.
