Default oil leak

hello,
i own a volvo s70 wagon. 1998. it appears i have a oil leak, its driving me nuts. my husband is working on trying to fix it himself. he is going to first try the pvc or pcv (dont know) changing that first. hopefully its not the main seal. anyone change a main seal? how expensive is it for a dealer to fix. right now we have spent about 100-200 in parts trying the pvc first. thanks in advance for advice.

Where is the oil leak from? The PCV tube behind the power steering pump that tears all the time won't cause a real oil leak.Common sources of oil leaks on these vehiclesare the turbocharger oil lines and the oil pan gasket. So... where is the leak? And it's "PCV.' Stands for positve crankcase ventilation.

I uploaded a pic of my leak on a 98 S70 GLT. This is the primary spot, from the little hole between the engine and the transmission, but is also leaking from either one or more of the turbo lines.
Is this a rear main seal leak? How long can these leak be let go and what would be the most efficient cost effective way to deal with these types of leaks?
Thanks to any responses.
I love this car.

That is usually a rear main leak. But also could be a really bad cam seal leaking and dripping in by the crank sensor and leaking down.
Most shops charge 8 to 10 hours labor to replace the seal.

It can last till you are leaking alot of oil fast. You don't want to wait to long though.
If it is leaking pretty bad you could seize the engine.

Don't forget the oil cap seal. It can fill up the spark plug galley area and find it's way down the head to the top of the transmission area.

I'm keeping a close eye on this. Right now, it goes through a quart in about 500 miles. I can live with that. 8 to 10 hours is what the dealer said it would taketo fix. In my area that translates to $1200 labor.

It seems to leak less when the oil level is lower too. If I top it off, it seems to zip down to half a quart low and then stabilize there for a few hundred miles.

Have any of you ever heard of White Knght? Supposedly, itis a sealleak fixer. The fluidis a Diethylene Glycol Monoethyl Ether fluid. Their claim is that it will bring life back to bad seals that are dripping.

I need to find out how to isolate a leaky cam seal. I'll look into that and also the oilcap seal, is that the same as the oil fill cap?

Thanks for your comments.
Timk.

Hi,

This is my personal opinion, but I would stay away from any of the "Fix Fluids". I have not heard a single good result reported on those products. But what do I know, you could try it and may find it effective, but again, if it were my car, I would just replace the seal with a new one because I don't want anything mixed with engine oil.
