Exclamation Oil light Flashing ?

Have 99 s70, today driving home i realized oil light is flashing with no pattern. It would flash a few times go out, stay steady go out flash go out etc...

I checked oil it is full, good color. Thing is just bought car and is due for oil change in another 500miles I was going to change it this weekend, therefor i dont know how old the oil is. Could it be it is just old oil and when i change it, it will stop or something else.

Still drives good, no weird noises or anything

Please Help?

Pay to check around for oil leaks asap.
Any signs of camshaft, rms or crankshaft seal leaks.
May even be a faulty oil pressure switch or simply a loose wire to it?

If the oil level is good. you are looking for a mechanical or electrical reason for htis to happen.

Electrical is going to be the oil pressure switch or a chaffing of the wire for the oil pressure circiut. I don;t know for fact, but I would think the oil light is a *to ground* switch, meaning the switch causes a grounding when there is insufficient oil pressure. Which is why wire chaffing could cause an intermittent light. You could invest $10-15 for a new switch and see if it solves the problem.

Mechanical is not going to be anything good. If you have seal leaking bad enough (you would see a lot of oil). For high mileage cars, an oil pump going out or loosing tolerances, bearings that are badly worn. The latter would likely result in some knocking internally.

Based on what you wrote, I'd lean towards the switch or wiring.

Did you notice if it comes on more at idle? If so, you likely have low oil pressure (will need to install gauge on oil pressure port to confirm). Likely causes in order of probability:
  1. O-rings in oil pan need to be replaced; relatively common problem.
  2. Crank and/or con-rod bearings worn out.
  3. Oil pump worn out.
But like kwatt said; I would start w/cking the oil pressure switch; failure with these is also relatively common. If you're not DIYer or don't have a gauge, shouldn't cost much to have a tech ck the oil pressure.
