Default P2251

I keep getting code p2251 coming up when i run it on the machine for my volvo S70 2000. The ETC light appears and the car starts jumping and the RPM's go up and down. THis only happens after i drive the car for a while and then sit at a stop light or in traffic for a while. If i just drive the highway and don't stop or have long rides no lights come on and the car runs great. What is the ETC light for and should i continue to drive the car. The local shop i go to can't seem to find the problem because every time i take it to them the light has went off after the car has sat for a while. I am at a loss. I have no clue what to fix on it. Can anyone help?

Sounds like the throttle body is on its way out. There are several steps to take here. Take the car to a Volvo dealer, tell them that the ETM (Electronic Throttle Module) lamp is on. Pray to the Volvo Gods that your car's inservice date (date of original retail purchase) is November of 2000 or later (not real likely, but you can hope) If so, the Volvo dealer will look it over, and do a software update/ ETM cleaning for free- unless this has already been done at some point in the car's history, at which point, hopefully, they will replace the throttle body for free. See, as part of a class action settlement on the ETM system, Volvo extended the warranty on the ETM to 10 years/ 200,000 miles. If you aren't under warranty anymore, then either pay the Volvo shop, or an independent Volvo specialist/ Euro specialist with Volvo experience to confirm that the ETM is bad, then order a replacement ETM from www.xemodex.com- they sell a redesigned, rebuilt ETM that permanently fixes the problem and costs less than one from Volvo. Replacement isn't that hard, but if you're not that handy, then take it to your mechanic- again, preferably a Volvo specialist. The rebuilt ETM costs $550.00 plus refundable core charge, which you get back after they receive your old one. There's a couple other outfits rebuilding ETMs, but as far as I know, only xeMODex is doing them with the non- wearing sensor. Even a new Volvo unit STILL has the flawed design.

If you want to know more about the ETM trouble, either google "Volvo ETM" or go to www. vexedvolvo.com, which is a site dedicated to ETM troubles.
