Default Possible buyer but have questions

I am considering purchasing a S70 or 850 to use as a daily driver. I have never owned a Volvo but have always loved the looks of these two models. From reading here on the forum, there seems to be various opinions as to which year and model is best so I am confused.

Is there a year of either of these I should avoid? I understand about maintenance records being a valued asset to the car but are there common issues that raise their ugly head in certain has over others?

Can I get anywhere close to 25 MPG combined on either of these cars?

Thanks

Bob

Hi Bob, welcome to the site.

I like the turbo cars between '95 and '98. Yes you can get around 25 mpg combined as long as the car is tuned and has good O2 sensors.

Default 98 S70 GLT (Turbo)

I currently own a 98 S70 GLT, and have had it almost 3 years.

I drive about 70% on the highway and 30% on backroads and my current average mile per gallon is 25.6

Having said that, I would NOT recommend the 98. This particular year is known to have transmission problems around 130 - 140 thousand miles. I know this because my transmission went up very recently. Additionally, this year is very picky about what transmission you put in it.

The 98 also has a service light that comes on every 5000 miles (7500 if it isn't turbo) and can only be reset by a Volvo dealer. They will usually charge about 30 dollars to do this. Personally, I just ignore the light. The 98 was the last year before they implemented a new computer system that makes the owners life much easier in regards to transmission problems and self-servicing the car.

I like my 98, it's a great car, but if you're given the option, go with a 99 or newer.

I have not read about any issues with the '98's transmissions. Also, the '99 and '00 models have an ETM (Electronic Throttle Module) which was Volvo's first 2 years of having that system. After 10 years most of them have to get that system replaced which is over $1,000 at the dealer, self service is about $500.

Yes the service light can be reset if you purchase tool for about $65. Most people just ignore it or tape over the bulb.

Could not disagree more; if anything avoid MY 1999 - 2004. Especially the earlier of those as they're known for ETM and Transmission issues.

+1 w/everything rspi said in this thread.
