Default power window problem

Hello folks. I'm new here. I've got a problem with my 98 S70 T5 and I'd greatly appreciate some help. The short of it is that, while driving yesterday, the front passenger power window motor stopped fully responding to the driver side control switch. It would power the window downwards but not up. I tried the passenger control but it too could only power downward. It's stuck right now about 2/3 the way down. Does anyone have any ideas on what the cause of the problem is and what I could do about it? Thanks for taking a look.

best,
Josh

You might have to take to door panel off and check for power.Alot of times the switches go bad.I have never seen the motor only go one way and the switch not be bad.I have a feeling both of your front window switches are bad.

Thanks tech. I should also mention that the first three LEDs on the stereo face plate (i.e. 3/6) no longer light. Might it be that between this and the switch issue I have a more general electric problem (i.e. not just a switch issue) or do you think it is more likely that these two are unrelated?

best,
Josh

The two are not releated the light bulbs in the radio burned out.I think it is just a switch issue. If one worked one way and the other side the other way I would say to try the drivers side in the pass side to get the window up.But they both won't work in the up position.

I just had a similar problem occur yesterday. I just bought my 98 S70 GLT on Tuesday. Yesterday (Wednesday) the drivers side window stopped going up. The switch will make all the other windows go up and down, just not the drivers side window. Upon removal of the door panel, I could hear a clicking noise when the switch was depressed. I disconnected the window controls from the drivers side window motor, ran a 2 wires to the battery (one neg one pos) and then jumped the power window motor by touching the other 2 ends to the pins where the connector for the switch would be go on. This got my window back up, so now I'm waiting to hear from the dealership what they plan to do to permanently remedy this situation. Now that it's stopped raining here, and it's fricking sunny and gorgeous I'd love to be able to cruise around with the windows down and the sunroof open... but I'd hate to have to keep jumping the motor every time I need to get the drivers window back up.

*Cliffs Notes* Jump the power window motor by running a lead to your battery.

I put my car into the shop for this and to replace a cooling fan sensor. The tech found that the main switch was faulty but was able to get the window to roll up anyway. Since the little thing was 180 just for the part, and I'm strapped, I opted not to change it out for the present. Thanks everyone for your help on this.

Remove the door panel and jump the window motor.
There is a white plug under the door panel that has 2 wires.
Power and ground to one way makes it go down if you swap the wires around then it will go up.

Tech, thanks for the quick response. I was able to get the window rolled up. However, here's the issue now.

both rear swtiches worked since i pulled the switch in question and tested it in the other door and it rolled up/down the window with no problems. The working switch from the other door however did not roll the door in question's window up, thus, elminating those two switches. I now wonder if my front driver side switch is bad since i believe the sets of switches must work in conjunction. am i correct? anyone with any inputs?

thank you

Usually if the main one goes bad the others will still work.

I have an issue with my driver's side rear door window too. It won't go down, but if I power the switch as to bring it up, I can hear the motor engage, but it won't the other way. I checked the child lock on it and it is in the right place. Any ideas?

I have the same problem, all switches work except for the driver's side driver window switch. Door panel is off right now. It clicks when button is depressed, but not for up. If it's a switch, do they come in singles?

Any problem with a rear window not raising from the master switch is something that can be fixed by you, if you want to get into that. If the driver's window is not working the switch is a goner (Volvo built in a little obselesence by having a smaller contact plate in the switch for the drivers window -- specifically the one that raises the window. Eventually a hole is burnt into the plate from dirt, age, etc. causing the electrical connection to overheat and pvc is vaporized and attacted to exactly where you don't want it -- the electrical contacts. When it finally stops working the heat damage is not repairable without spare parts, etc., etc. which are not available). The best thing you can do is STOP using the button that raises/lowers the window in question. I have 5 minute removal/installation photo instructions for this switch on my site www.switchdoctor.net. I'll be working on a photo guide to service your switch -- you'll need a can of dustoff, a can of deoxIT DN5 cleaner, a mini (very mini) screwdriver, and a lint free cloth like an eyeglass cleaner. It is easy to damage these, so you'll have to use a light touch. The service guide should be up in a few days.
