Default Putting in a new rack and pinion.

Hey there,

This is my first time posting here and I was wondering if anybody had any tips or tricks when replacing a rack and pinion on my 98 s70.

I've done a search and have saved the threads "2000 rack and pinion replacement procedure part 1&2" for offline use. I was just wondering if anybody else had any pointers to make the swap go smoothly.

Thanks!

1) Is your current rack leaking?

2) How bad?

3) Do you have a replacement yet?

If your answer is yes to question one and not bad to question two, my next question would be have you tried draining the PS fluid from the reservoir and replacing it with a leak stop fluid?

I did that three months ago with mine which was leaking from the driver's side seal inside the boot protecting the inner tie rod.

No more drips on the driveway and I have not had to add a drop of fluid since.

Now if you have already sourced a replacement rack it makes sense to do the install.

1. Yes

2. Leaking out of both pass and driver side. pooling up in the boots, which are also torn. Was going through about a quart of fluid every day and a half depending on how much driving was done. Wasn't aware of leak stop fluid. Professional diagnosis shows that pinion seals are shot, and reccomended replacing the whole rack from age of car.

3. yes I already have a reman'd rack ready and waiting to be put in this weekend.

I haven't done one on these cars, but it's right there when you do a front sway bar (dropped the rear of the front engine carrier). I imagine the most difficult part will be separating the steering wheel shaft coupler from rack input shaft; I would soak that coupling w/PB-blaster for days before..

I wrote an entire process on how to do the job. Step by step. It was added about a week ago. I'd give you the link to it but I don;t know how to do that. Its in this section
