I have a 1998 S70 GLT that was recently submitted to Ohio eCheck to verify compliance with state emission standards. My check engine light was on and needless to say, the car failed. The failure was due to the Evaporative Emissions Control System Tank Detected (gross leak), error code P0455. Being that I have absolutely no fricking clue as to what this means (other than that I can't pass the eCheck in order to get my plates), I wanted to know if anybody else has any experience dealing with this issue. If so, what kinds of repair costs am I looking at if I take it in to a shop, and would this be something somebody with little to no car repair experience could easily do if I could find the replacement parts? Thanks for any help you can give. This forum is a godsend.

It could be as simple as a dry rotted and cracked gas cap seal.
Or could be a leak in one of the hoses for the evap emmissions system.

 

Thanks tech for your posts. After looking into the issue further, I found a rather large tube coming off of the top left side (if you're standing in front of the grille looking at engine) coming off of the fan that connects to what looks like where a filter is housed. The tube is cracking pretty good in at least one area. Could this possibly be the source of the problem? Checked the local autostore here and they can't order the part... I guess its only available from Volvo. Thanks again for your posts.

Hi Ken,

If your S70 is turboed, the piping is probably the intercooler hose that connects between the intercooler and the intake.

If your gas cap is in good condition, the problem could be due to faulty charcoal canister, or EVAP purge valve. I am not sure how similar the system is as compared to the 850; see if you think the system is similar; I'll attach illustration but note that I'll have to delete it within the next few days. Be sure to save it before I delete it.

If the hose that runs from the top left of your grill to that box on the left, that is your ECU cooling tube. I had the same thing on my C70.

 

It will not cause your problem.
That hose you speak of is just a cooling hose.
A/C runs from inside the car to the engine and transmission computer. Then it goes through that hose to the radiator to also help cool somemore on the radiator.

 

The evaporative control valve has been the cause of many of the "large leak" dtc's. It's easy to access and replace, but I would try to diagnose the problem first.

 

Funny - just had this code (P045) pop up on my S70 GLT last week. Hope it's simple and cheap when the mechanic takes a look at it.

 

I had this on mine earlier in the year and the problem was a cracked/deteriorated "J" hose.
The hose is about 1" in diameter andis right in front of the gas tank under the car. I think it connects to the canister.
Put the back of the car on ramps and roll under there and look for a rubber hose shaped like a "J" and check it out real good.

It just so happens I have had this same issue twice within the past couple months. I also tried sealing a crack on the big plastic hose at the front of the engine compartment and when I cleared the code, it stayed away. It then came back this week and when I read this post it suddenly dawned on me, both times it happened was when I had just filled up with gas. Prices being volatile these days, I tend to squeeze as much into the tank as I can.

I can recall reading somewhere that overfilling the tank can casue some damage to the emmisions system and I now suspect that it actually blocks the vapor flow, thus causing this error code. After about 20 miles, I again cleared the code and it has not come back so I strongly believe that, for me at least, this code has been casued by overfilling the gas tank.

It could be possible that after a single incident, the vapor line connecting to the filler tube could be flooded and may not clear correctly. Just a guess at this point but something to consider.

I have a 1998 C70 coupe and since 2003 I have had a code that represents a large evap leak, trouble is my model year doesn't do a complete diagnostic so I or my very good mechanic could never find the problem, so I would disconnect the neg- wire from the battery right before my smog inspection ( no joke it works) to reset the light temporary, then last year ( yes 11 years later) while reading another Volvo forum about this problem it spoke about replacing the PURGE VALVE, so I did this and IT WORKED ( it cost about $48.00 with shipping I bought it online and replaced it myself, two hoses- no clamps- and one eletrical connection) no fault code since July 2014

. I will add that an Evap code is not a serious issue on these cars ... just turns on CEL does not damage engine at all.
