Can anyone enlighten me as to what the dollar cost might be to purchase either a used or re-built automatic transmission for my 1998 S70 base?
I have no clue as to the cost here and the car is presently at a transmission shop to get analyzed for what is causing the problem.

Just trying to figure out in advance as to whether I should keep the car or sell it for next to nothing. It has 170k miles on it and it is in decent shape.

 

Hello everyone, I have a VOLVO V70 year 1998 with a tow bar original from VOLVO with the homolagation code E4-00-0540. In the town bar was a small plaque with some technical indications. The adhesive plaque disappears after twenty years of use and now I need these data to present to the TUV/ITV.
Could anybody to send me a picture of this plaque as it is a standard one to show to the TUV technicians. Thanks a lot, Hector

Mr D - two ways to find a used transmission: search Craigslist for somebody parting out a similar model or use car-parts.com to find a recycle yard near you. The latter is also a good way for get a sense of the pricing. Rebuilding or a rebuilt unit will certainly be way more costly than what your car is worth. Assuming you need a FWD automatic, they should be easy to find and the tranmissions are very stout so I wouldn't worry about going used provided the fluid looks ok. I'd bet you can find one in the 250 range

Hopefully just a blown fluid line to the radiator and low fluid.

 

Mr. Moderator. A follow up question for you concerning buying a trans from a "parting-out" person. Is the transmission usually already out of the car that I am buying it from or do I have to remove it myself?

 

usually people parting out cars have already removed big components and should do the work for you. If you go to a yard, they'd do the same so you should make that part of the deal. As to your existing car, I'd start by doing a couple of drain/fills making sure you use the fluid spec'd for your year (ie owner's manual will either show JWS3309 or Dex III.) and filled to the correct level. I'd also do a trick called a "shifter row" where you go from park to lo to park about 20x fast (car can be off). Idea here is to clean off the contacts in the park/neutral position sensor in the shifter in case its sending faulty info to the TCU.
