Replacing AWD S70 transmission.

Thank you, lifesgoodhere. I have also printed off the walkthrough from VADIS, so i feel comfortable doing the replacement. I firmly believe that my transmission failed due to my bad viscous coupling. So, here is my plan: I am going to purchase a used FWD transmission and remove my angle gear and driveshaft so that I will have a FWD vehicle now. Does anyone foresee any issues with this? Any help would be appreciated.

mmmm I would just disconnect/remove the driveshaft. What you are going to try doing is making it front wheel drive. Ok, would work fine as long as the transmission is the same (aw50-42 I think that is the 2wd one) im thinking the AWD has a different tranny in it. Also you would have to buy a new passenger side axle.

well, today, i pulled the drive shaft off, and have done all but the final unbolting of the transmission. Waiting to do that until new used transmission arrives. I ordered a used AWD transmission with 90k on it. Since the AWD system is purely mechanical in this car, i feel that it will be no problem have an AWD tranny not connected to any drive shaft (this is a cheapest fix type of deal, mind you).

yes, but when you disconnect the driveshaft, the angle gear spins, but with no load of the rear part of the AWD system. Toque flows straight through, like a bearing.
What I mean, you could (have) removed the angle gear, bought a right side axleshaft (CV shaft) and not needed to replace the entire tranny, if the tranny is the AW50-42 (2wd tranny I think. Might have been used on AWD models as well, not sure, never paid that much attention to it.)

the transmission i ordered is 50-42LE. Which may indeed be the FWD tranny. I believe that the front axles will work just the same. If it is the FWD tranny i will have no need for the angle gear, and if i remove the rear axles, then they will spin freely. problem solved. will let you know if it is the FWD or AWD tranny. I need to do some more reading on the part numbers of the trannys

UPDATE: used FWD transmission installed. Had to get new passenger side front drive axle. transmission control module has tranny in limp mode. Have used TCM on the way ($20 off ebay is cheaper than getting the original flashed at the stealership). BTW, i pulled to rear axles in the hope of avoiding problems dragging the rear differential; well, this causes the anti lock breaks to cease working, so i have to put those back on in the morning. should be good to go when the new control module comes in.
