Default Rough idle, white smoke, BAD Smell

My car has been running fine....It's a 2000 S70 GLT with 71,000 miles. Last night, my wife drove the car and complained that it was running poorly. This morning, I fired it up and have the following issues:

1. Rough Idle, takes longer to start up.
2. puffing white exhaust
3. the smell almost reminds me of Gunk engine degreaser coming out of the tailpipe...

Oil looks good, coolant level is full. I don't have any bubbling in the coolant reservoir at idle. CEL is now lit. She had to drive it about 15 miles last night and the coolant temp. was normal the whole time.

Do I have a bad turbo?

Thanks for your help,

Drew

Thanks Tech,

I drove it carefully to Autozone, car has no power.

They pulled a P0300
The PCM has determined that multiple random misfires have occurred
1. Ignition system fault
2. Vacuum Leak
3. Injector Fault
4. High or Low fuel pressure

How bad is it? Where do I begin? Does this rule out the headgasket or turbo? The coolant and oil look fine to me.
I now realize the smell is unburnt fuel.

Your help is much appreciated,

Drew

When was your last tune up?
If a while ago start with new plugs.
Then see if it still does it.
Your coils might be bad.

Ok,

I just bought the car about 4,000 miles ago. The only things I've done:

1. Timing Belt (dealer did it)
2. ABS/TRAC module (I did)

Any way to test each coil pack or spark plug?

Thanks again,

Drew

Remove the plugs and inspect them.
The coils are hard to tell. Usually codes lead to the bad coils.

So typically, your recommendation would be to replace all the coils and plugs?

I'm pretty sure the car hasn't had a tune-up. I received a notice in the mail from the dealer saying it was ready....what's all involved? They treat me pretty
right price wise...should I just take it there and have them do the complete tune up?

Thanks again for your advice,

Drew

Tune up service includes.
Oil change
Fuel filter change
Air filter change
Plugs
Coolant flush (some dealers)
Pollen filter.
General check over.
Thats about it.
Coils aren't a part of the service.

Thanks Tech!

I pulled the plugs....one looked really bad....the rest were OK. I replaced all the plugs, but the problem still exists. Can I replace just the one coil pack on the plug that was really fouled up?

Thanks,

Drew

You can but remember if one went bad the others aren't far behind.

Damn!

Is this normal for a 70k Volvo? Dealer quoted me $55 per coil....decent deal?

Thanks,

Drew

Thats not to bad.
Also check e-bay and FCP groton.

Somewhat normal depending on driving hadits.
Alot of city driving will make them go earlier to do excessive heat from slower driving.
Alot of highway driving they should last longer.

Tech,

Unfortunately the problem still exists. Anything else I should look at? I'm thinking of breaking down and taking it to the dealer.

Thanks,

Drew

....But before I do...just to be clear, I replaced just the one coil pack on the plug that was severely fouled. I was reading another thread in which you said to inspect for hairline cracks.

I noticed that all 5 coil packs have a hairline crack. A couple have 2 or 3 cracks. Could this be it? What confuses me is my car was running fine, then it was started up three hours later and would hardly run at all.

Also, during a local search for the coil packs, one dealer asked why I wanted all five. He said that he has never replaced all five at once and he thinks I'm crazy for trying it.

I trust your judgement as many people on the board here do (especially since you're diagnosing online...not easy) If this ends up not being the issue, where do I go from here?

Thanks,

Drew

You replaced only one or all five?
If all five and it still misfires then I would do a compression test.

No, just the one. I had to order the other 4...they will be here tomorrow. All 5 had hairline cracks. I have my fingers crossed....a compression test obviously has me scared.

Well, I have 5 new plugs and 5 new coils....no difference in how the car is running. So, I guess a compression test is in order?

Thanks,

Drew

Yes that is the next step.
Sorry to say but it isn't looking good.
If you have 0 compression on one cylinder I will bet you have a burn't valve.

What causes this? This car is like new.....and I'm not beating it when I drive it. I just limped it to the dealer....I noticed when I came home that I have a spot of oil on the floor.....DAMN!

I feel like getting rid of it as soon as it's fixed!!!!!!

You use premium gas?
We have seen alot of burn't valves since gas prices went up and alot of people are using Regular gas.
