Most common cause is cracked oil pan o- rings. Happens all the time The o- rings are located in an area where pressurized oil passes. As they age, the o- rings harden and eventually crack. This causes oil pressure to drop, especially at idle, which will lead to lifter tapping and the oil light flickering. Get it fixed ASAP, and don't drive the car unless absolutely necessary. Order an oil pan o- ring kit- fcpgroton has them for like $15, it comes with all types of o-rings for the oil system on all white block engines, which means you won't use all of them, then get the liquid gasket material from Volvo. Don't use RTV or the stuff fcp sells for the gasket, it WILL leak eventually, and it creates a flexible layer between block and oil pan, which is not a good thing. Spend the $30 or so and get the Volvo stuff from the dealer. Auto- parts stores also sell anaerobic liquid gasket, which also works okay, but the Volvo stuff is best, and it's not that much more than generic anaerobic sealer. Clean the pan and block mating surfaces with gasket cleaner solvent from a local parts store, and a plastic scraper if possible. If using a razor blade, try not to nick the aluminum! Clean the solvent with brake cleaner, then apply the new gasket material with one of the tiny foam paint rollers used for trim. Put a dab of grease on each of the oil pan o- rings, and use that to stick them to the block, then install the oil pan. While you're in there, change the turbo drain tube o- ring and the dipstick tube o- ring. They're leaking... yes, they are... I've never seen one that didn't, and they're included in the kit.

Then I am lucky my turbo drain and dipstick tube don't leak.

It's usually more of a seepage than an outright leak/ drip. I don't bother with them unless I'm changing the oil pan or the turbo or something that has me working in the area, or the customer is picky and specifically WANTS everything to be perfect.
