Cool S bottun, Turbo and 1st Gear?

hello i drive 98 s70 glt, and like u all know they have E button for economy, S button for sport, and W button for winter. so yesterday i was kinda racing my friend and i noticed when i had the E button on, the car kinda strugled and made more effort than it should have. but than when i turn on the S button, it went like the car didnt had no weight at all. and whenever i tryed burning out with any of the bottons, it starts from the 2nd gear. i know that ur not supposed to race with the E button, and that S button has higher rpm. and i always warm up the engine before goin to high rmp. so my quastions are:

1st - is there anyway i can start from the 1st gear with automatic transmission?

2nd - when i have E botton on does turbo works or it only works with the S botton?

Your turbo works no matter what button you have engaged.

All the "S" button does is delay upshifts. If you're running with your foot on the floor, it makes absolutely no difference. Also, the automatic ALWAYS starts in 1st, unless you're in winter mode, when it starts in 3rd, or by shifting to L and turning on winter mode, you can make it start out in 2nd.

You might be thinking of certain Mercedes- a lot of them ALWAYS start in 2nd to keep from spinning the tires (light rear end, RWD= wheelspin!) then immediately shift into 1st if you're trying to accelerate quickly. Even my little old 190E does this, and it's pathetically underpowered.

I believe, in another post, its been confirmed that S starts the car in first, E starts it in second for fuel economy and W starts it in 3 to control wheel slippage.

Did you have TRACs on? If you did that would have prevented it. As it applies the brakes to prevent slippage.

I actually did a thorough check today on this- it's the sort of geek I am. S mode delays upshifts and hastens downshifts. Both S and E start in 1st. W starts in 3rd, unless you put the transmission in L, and press W, then it starts in 2nd. With TRACS enabled, it will briefly chirp the tires on a full throttle start in both S and E modes. With TRACS disabled, it will smoke the tires in either mode. My car, the test vehicle is a '98 S70 GLT with 127,000 miles.

+1 With Carrots. You can verify shifting information in the owners manual or on the Volvo, owners website. I test drove a S70 wagon that spun tires in the 1st 3 gears, that kinda blew my mind or maybe it was only the 1st 2 gears, I'm not 100% sure. It chirpped tires when it shifted at about 58 mph. Wow!

On my T-5R, it will NOT spin tires in the E mode.

New tires, more grip. Mileage shouldnt make a difference. My 240 has at least 200k and she can still drive like I stole her.

A set of new tires will grip the road better. Not sure on spinning the tires in a GLT though.

i actually tested this few days ago. tires spin only at corners or when going up hill from a dead stop, thats probably because i have new tires. and i started driving with the s botton on, and now i can feel that the car starts from the first gear. well anyway thanks for the info people.

Like I said, if I turn off TRACS, I can smoke 'em if I want to.
