Default Salvage value for '98 S70 non-turbo

The timing belt let go on a friend's S70. So the engine is toast. The car has less than 100k on it, so it's in pretty good shape otherwise.

Instead of selling it for scrap I thought I'd ask the forum what might be a reasonable amount to ask on craigslist.

Any advice appreciated.

The car is in the DC metro area.

Markets vary widely and of course this is not the time of year for this kind of thing in the north, but the cool thing about craigslist is you know when you have it priced right because the phone rings. Make a few calls to local scrap yards to get their number and anything more than that you are money ahead.

this is an interesting question. If you think the car is in good shape, what would your asking price be if the engine were good? Then you can assume a replacement head from a wreck is $300 plus $200 for the new timing stuff plus shop time (say 8-10 hours) and your going to need to deduct $1500 for the repair. My guess is a base model '98 S70 in good shape with 100K miles could fetch $1500-2000 so I think $500-700 is a reasonable asking price assuming you can find somebody who likes Volvos and is able to do the repair themselves (ie get a running car for 1000-1200 that can sell for 1500 to 2000).

This sound reasonable.
