Default SURPRISE!!!! It's a turbo!!

I recently bought a 2000 S70 from my brother in law. he told me it was a non turbo model. Turns out it is is a turbo, it just doesnt work! What would cause a turbo to stop working? Could it be as simple as just replacing the turbo itself? Any ideas on what it may take to get the turbo back into working condition?

If the turbo is blown, it's likely due to the intake sucking in some piece of junk that shredded the turbine. Either that or oil starvation.

Are you SURE it's blown?

Inspect all hoses from the intercooler, turbo, intake, exhaust manifold, etc.
Inspect oil feed lines to the turbo itself.
If all those check out, remove the turbo and check the blades. If they don't spin freely, go to a pick-a-part or Volvo repair shop, and buy a used replacement.

That is unless you want to upgrade... which is rarely cheap when it comes to Volvos. At least not if you want to do it right.

Yeah you COULD do what Alec suggests.

OR

you could click over to IPD, get a new turbo control valve. While you are replacing that you may want to get a big turbo, high flow down pipes, cat back exhaust, cool air intake, high po intercooler, and have your ECU upgraded. `That should help with your sluggish performance.

Not looking for a racer lol, just the stock turbo would be fine. All i know is that it doesnt work, there is no boost during acceleration and no whistle sound. Just discovered that there was a turbo under the hood. I would love to look at it closer and possibly fix it up. All depends on $$$$$

Remove the induction hose from the turbo and see if it spins freely.

Sounds like you have a GLT. It is very hard to hear those turbo's wind up. Are you sure it is not working?

Like I said, i didnt realize it was a turbo. You dont feel a boost or hear the signature turbo whistle so I assume it is not working. Somebody suggested to remove the induction hose and see if it spins. I'll try that and let you guys know what the outcome is. If the turbo was inoperable, wouldnt the engine have mechanical issues? I'm a Sunday mechanic at best lol.

Nope issues will be caused from it not working. Also another way would be to get a boost gauge and connect to the intake and drive it. See if it ever goes into positive pressure.

Yeah... GLTs are very quiet- Volvo worked hard to make them that way. Only way I know mine's a turbo is from being pressed into the seat a little when I floor it

Anyhow, if the turbo spins freely and doesn't have much play, check the wastegate actuator, the control valve, and the bypass valve.

Hey, I don't blame you for wanting that Turbo working. It makes a big difference. I have a non-Turbo S70 and a Turbo V70 GLT. My V70 will absolutely blow the doors off of my S70. Luckily the wife drives the non-turbo most of the time. Whenever I drive my non-Turbo it is excrutiatingly sluggish.

Anyhow, you could follow the recommendations of these other folks here on how to test it. Maybe you can find a Volvo in a junkyard near you with a good turbo. I live within 10 minutes of one of the largest ALL-VOLVO junkyards in the U.S. I am fortunate enough to be able to dig through hundreds of Volvos whenever I need a part.

Good luck. You will be grinnin' when you get the Turbo huffing.
