Default Test For Remote Locking/Alarm

Is it possible to manually test the remote locking function and alarm if you don't have a remote? The previous owner of my car (1998 S70 T5) lost the remote, and I don't mind buying another and paying the reprogram fee, but if there are other issues with the remote locking, I might not want to spend the money.

Thanks as Always!

Lock the car with the drivers window open. Wait a minute or 2 then reach in and pull the hood release and see if it goes off.
To **** it off lock and unlock the car with the key.

I performed the test as suggested, it did work, however the sound from the alarm was very weak, sounded something like Donald Duck with a cold. I tightened the nut in the center of the alarm horn, (it was very loose, about to fall off) now I have an ear piercing alarm. Thanks for the help!!
