Default are they blowing smoke?

So i took my car to get inspected and turns out i have the good old Gross EVAP leak code P0455. I asked 2 different places and they both charge about $100 to run the check. I already changed the gas cap. What they told me is that they basically run smoke though the intake and then just let come out the leak to find the problem...Do they really chrage $100 to blow smoke up my intake!? and is there any tips you guys might have on fixing it yourself?

My S70 has the same code. My dad and I are going to tackle changing all the elbow joints and whatnot of the EVAP sys. during my spring break.

I know it sounded a little silly to me when I first heard of it, especially since I don't know all that much about cars. Volvo charged me $144 to run the smoke test to determine the location of a leak in my evap system. It turned out to be a bad purge valve, which they then replaced as well for an additional $51. I may have been overcharged a bit, but at least they found and fixed the problem.

Yes they do that or add pressure to the system and check for the leak.

I use pressure and charge 1 hour labor to do it.

kinda like the dish soap and water to find a leak in a tire! i had just never heard of the smoke thing and it sounded a bit off the wall. sometimes it is easier to fix it yourself, in this case i think i will be having the shop do it. thanks for the heads up.
