Timing belt jumped.....HELP!
Hi , Got a question for hopefully some volvo techs.. 98 S70 ...The wife calls and says when she started it up it started making a bad sound... I get home and have her start it and can tell immediately its the timing belt flapping aginst the plastic cover... just before "turn it off" was out of my mouth, the car stalled....She thought I was wanting her to keep it going and cranked it again a couple seconds before she got that I said off.... I pulled the cover off and the tensioner is minus its ***** and the belt jumped.. SOOOOO , my question is , could there be a chance the motor is fine because it was only at idle when it jumped or is there no chance at all of valves not getting bent?
This is the 5cyl, 20v motor....
Its over 100 degrees here so I don't want to bother putting another tensioner on out in the sun if it's just a wast of My time.. Could I pull the valve cover off, turn the cams and make sure the valves all close from up top?? I was for many
years a bmw/mercedes Mechanic but I"m not familiar with volvos....
Thanks for any input..

Yea, I figured so being a 20v.... This dosn;t look like a particularly fun motor to tear into....Any special tools, tricks or headaches I"ll run into pulling the head?
Cheapest place to order valves and associated parts/gaskets?
I:m kinda on the fence with this car..Its been a good car and real clean but it has over 200k and its quite boring with low resale...Grrr
Thanks again.

Removing the head is actually pretty easy on this car. I had one off in my adventures trying to deal with other issues and it really didn't take long. It's designed to be removed without having to pull everything apart...intake has slotted bolt holes on the bottom for removal of just half and loosening the other half and pulling it up and letting it lay back, same with exhaust. I think the hardest part was pulling the 500 valve cover bolts and re-torquing them in sequence. I want to say you could probably have the head off, even in your driveway, in half a day or so without killing yourself removing it. Parts are not cheap though that I found, so that will be your challenge. Hopefully someone here can give a cheap supplier for valves and misc. components.
