Morning Guys, I took my 98 S70 in for an oil change and was told my left inner Tire Rod was bad. Now that leaves me with some questions.

Should i do both-left and right?
All four- inner and outer?
What's the avg cost, for inner pair and all four?

It's called a Tie rod, inner and outer.

Search, looks up parts cost on FCP Groton, IPDUSA, or call your friendly Volvo dealer (be prepared for sticker shock there).

How can an oil change place make that determination?

I can tell you replacing them at a dealer with their parts is going to cost over $400 dollars for sure.

Better make sure you need them.

FCP has the parts relatively inexpensive($80 max). The labor is what scares me, as this is not something i would dare attempt.

Tie rod is easy to do actually. I am NO mechanic and did mine and also proud to say it didn't require alignment afterwards. But any shop will include that.

I wouldn't expect more than a couple hours labor to do both sides inner and outer.

Volvo dealer would charge twice that in parts minimum. Unless you call Darrell Waltrip Volvo in Virginia and ask for Don or Jamie in parts. They will discount 30% min., off your dealer and ship the parts to you with genuine Volvo parts.

 

It is easy to do. I would do an alignment afterwords. The alignment will be off once you are done.

To get it close if you only do one count the number of turns to get the outer off and then reinstall it the same number but it will still be off but close enough to not burn the tire up fast.

 

$400? Hmm.. not bad. I was just advised by my friend to go to the center for an oil change too but I am confused with his explanation.
