Default Tire Rod End

While replacing front struts on my 1999 S-70, I noticed that the inner tire rod end on the passenger side is worn out. I called a Volvo dealer parts department to inquire about a replacement. The parts guytells me that there are two different types (e.g., depends on the model number). Does this make sense. The car is over an hour commute from me. Is there an easy way to identify what I need?

Hello,

Yes, it does seem like there are two different types for the inner tie rod. Check the following vendor:

http://www.fcpgroton.com/CSV70/csv70suspension.htm

1. Inner Tie Rod (*Marked 4) outside thread 14mm: $18.00
2. Inner Tie Rod (*Marked 5) SIMI Rack: $19.50

*The product plate is on the driver's side front wheel well. Check the 5th line of the plate for last digit to the right of the divider. This should be a 4 or 5.

I hope this helps.

Hello,

I took my 2000 Volvo S70 in to get aligned and wheels balanced. It is pulling significantly to the right and has a shudder around 65-70 mph.

Balancing was done, but not alignment. I am told that the driver side inner tie rod end is "definately bad" and that the outer tie rod end is suspected to be bad, but they won't know for sure until they do the inner.

Just last week my brother helped me replace the wheel bearing hub assembly on this same side.

My brother is a good handy man, but he's not a Volvo technician. We are not certain if which parts we worked with.

However, I am quite certain we are not the cause of the pulling, because it was pulling before we touched it.

I am going to use "ball joint" in the following descriptions, though I realize I could be using the words wrong.

There were 2 "ball joints" that we touched. One was toward the front of the knuckle and one was toward the back.

What are these called respectively?

Which of these is the outer tie rod?

Anyone have a maintenance diagram?

Thank you

The tie rod in the one that makes the hub move. I believe it is the one in the back.
To check and see if it is bad jack up the car. Then put your hands at 3 and 9 o'clock and try moving it back and forth.
If you feel any play at all one of them is bad.
