Default Volvo S70 98 A/C clutch not engaging

Good afternoon,

I have a 1998 Volvo S70 and an A/C problem. Namely, there is no cold air blowing whatsover when A/C is on, and it appears that the A/C clutch never gets engaged (after toggling a/c, waiting, etc.) I checked all the connections and they seem to be proper. Before this, although it may not present relevant results, I checked the pressure on the low-pressure end and it read 80 PSI after a few minutes of running (although it seems like such a high reading may be due to the compressor/clutch not engaging). Would you please kindly advise as to what the problem with the clutch may be and if this would require a replacement of the compressor itself (and how much the costs normally run), or point me to a thread that touches on this issue?

Many thanks for your help!

-Marko

Do you have power on both sides of the low pressure switch?
Are you sure you are not low on freon?

Thanks for the reply. I checked the connections only, I did not check the power... Where exactly should I check for power? I was also semi-afraid to add more R134a refrigerant, as the gauge immediately shot up to 80 PSI, whereas the general "full" level should be reading at 25-45 PSI. What would normally prevent the clutch from engaging?

Thanks again for your help.

A bad Low pressure switch or relay could stop it from coming on.
Check for power at the low pressure switch.

Thanks for the response. I have not had the equipment to check the power at the low pressure switch, but will report back as soon as I do so. Could you please tell me how I can check if the relay is bad? Thank you.
