volvo S70 ignition problems
I have a 1998 volvo S70(no turbo). Recently been feeling a click or a grind of somekind whenI turn the ignition to the start position. Yesterday I went to turn car on and nothing happened, car did not turn on or crank. All the lights in the instument panel turn on, key moves freely between positions, car is in park, but still does not even attempt to turn over. I have read the other post on ignitions but they all describe different problems than my situation can anyone help.
thanks, ratfink

Thanks Erick J and Tech for your responses,
I tried to start the car in neutral but nothing happens, tried to jinggle the keys, even tried the "old fashion" banging on the ignition with myfist. The instrument panel comes on all the eletrical works but car does not turn over. The key does not get stuck in any positions, butyou can turn it as normal but car does not turn over.Looked at the other post and think it might be the ignition switch but hope its something more simple.

Next would be to take a test light and put it on the small wire on the starter. I think it is blue.
Have someone turn the key to the start position and see if the light lights up.
If it lights up the starter is bad.
If it doesn't then either the Immoblizer is activating or the PNP switch is bad.

I checked the green wire on the starter and there was power when atempting to crank. So, I took the starter off and took it to auto parts to test and buy new one. When they checked it, it passed all the tests. Should I put the starter back on or should I replace. My friend that is a tech. told me it might have been stuck. Dont know what to do next.
Starters can intermittantly fail, if they have a bad contact or winding in the armature. They will work with a few persuading taps.
If the solonoid on the starter is failing, it usually will click or buzz load enough to hear. A bad connection to the solinoid or battery will have simular symtoms.
Putthe starterback in. If it works, it may have been a bad connectiion to it.
If it doesn't work all the time, it's intermittant.
If it doesn't work at all, your problem most likely is somewhere else, from ignition switch to battery terminals(or weak battery)and all points in between.

I would reinstall and see what happens. But if you have power to the small wire everything inside the car is working fine and it might be a bad intermitant starter problem.
just realized that the radio is displaying CODE on the face. Looked it up in the owners manual but it says to enter the 4 digit code. Does each car have a different code or where can I find the code since I am not the original owner.
