Default What Mods???

Just bought a 98 S70 t5. I am looking to do a few basic mods to the car....I can't keep well enough alone. What are some of the things that I should do an still maintain it's overall reliability?

Thanks in advance...

An air filter is an air filter..............is an air filter, is an air filter!!! You DO NOT GAIN A THING WITH A K & N FILTER ELEMENT!!! If you want something more than stock............then you need a cold air inlet..............then use your K & N. An air filter is an air filter!!! The difference is whether it is 'clean' or dirty.

My brother has an '03 Ford F250 turbo Deisel and on one of the forums he belongs to it's been said that the K&N filters are actually not that good as they do not clean the incomming air as thorough as a stock filter so more dust can get into the engine and possibly damage the turine blades of the turbo. Just putting that out there. I have started to find a few sites with mods but it seems that many of the items I was looking start anywhere from $300 on up. I want better than stock but want to maintain my original reliability as well as the quality appearance. Thanks for the input.

well i just said air filter because i need a new one to begin with, but the intake is what you want for the turbo. plus it gives you some cheap "power" noise.

As has been discussed several times before, if you're going to modify the intake in anyway, your best bet is a custom home-made (i.e. Home Depot) cold air intake. It's amazing what a little 3" aluminum pipe and a cone-style filter can do. I've looked at a lot of the different performance parts out there for our cars, and you'll definitely get a MUCH bigger bang for your buck if you can fab some minor things yourself and find an exhaust shop that'll give you a good price on a 3" turbo-back exhaust (no cat, straight through style muffler) I haven't been able to do anything with mine yet because I'm taking care of minor maintenance things at the moment to get the car ready for a cross-country trip in January.

You're kidding right?
It's called a Home Depot Intake because you buy the things at Home Depot and fabricate them yourself...

Thanks for all the feedback. I have a old intake left over from my maxima I can use to fab a new one for the t5. I do have a freind that works at a muffler shop and his boss owes my other buddy a favor. I would like to go no cat but I am too lazy to have to swap out the turbo back exhaust for stock every couple of years that my emissons are due. My biggest concern is the quality of the cone filter I have a few no names lying around (one that has never been out of the box) but don't want to use anything that will compromise the air going into the engine. If I sound to cautions forgive, I am new to the world of Volvo's and don't want to get intosomething that will cause me to have to take the car into the shop for repairs and not mods... Thanks, you all are top notch for helping me out, keep up the good work....

You can use any filter you want without problems.

I have seen cars go 100,000 miles with a K&N filter and never any problems related to the filter.

Thanks for the education...
I have a HEAT SHIELD FILTER from Ractive/Tucan Industres. It has a lip at the end that I could, and have, modified to fit an intake routed from a cold air source. I will take a look at the Volvo engine bay and see if I can do something similar. If anyone has had bad luck with this type of filter please let me know. Sorry if my grammer and english is a little off. I have spent the past 2 days at the Grand Prix of Denver and am a bit worn at this point. Early rise late to bed. There was an Speed World Challege race and a race S60R was there but dropped out after a few laps for some sort of mechanical prob, better luck next time.

Here is a link for the type of filter if anyone is curious.

What is your budget like? What do you want more engine power or handling?

Really do a Stage 0 first. Check on Volvospeed what that is about. It is in the PINNED part in Performance section.

-K&N panel filter, and or EST's intake kit.
-3" downpipe
-2.5" CAT-back system
-ECU upgrade (SpeedTuning, RICA, IPD, Etc...)

That is a good start to engine upgrades.
