What they don't tell you.
Went to look at a pristine 80k mile S70 garaged, no rust, and not driven for at least five years.
Beautiful interior. Bad clear coat. Sun roof, iffy headliner. 80K miles. $750.
It was as described.
What they didn't describe is that there was not a drop of coolant in the engine.
Not even in the lower radiator hose. Didn't bother with a freshly charged battery I brought or unpacking tools.
I should have asked Sancho Panza if there were any questions I failed to ask before embarking on my quest.
Looked at a worst case scenario, and passed. Mr. Murphy was an optimist in my experience.
It was only an hour drive so it wasn't too bad a waste of time.
Work off a list of twenty or more questions before filling the tank and punching in google maps.
Hopped back into raggedy looking a 214k mile 745 and went home. Didn't miss a beat.
Some one else got it. I wish them well.

I've forever been threatened by high mileage vehicles, however i've heard numerous vehicle folks say that high mileage doesn't make any difference assuming the vehicle was very much kept up with… what vehicle did you purchase, what number of miles were on it when you got it, and how lengthy/what number of miles have you driven it up to this point? What has turned out badly?

It depends on your experience, diagnostic skill level, tools, and friends you can call on. Can your read and interpret schematics? If you pick up a cheap beater and it pukes, that's the game, you gambled and lost. If you've been at it forever and haven't taken the plunge, perhaps you are on the right course for you.
I'm all in on DD vehicles where I have less than 2K in acquisition and parts. Drive it for a couple of years, boringly reliable, get your money out, look for a new challenge. I worked in dealerships so I have some skills, albeit rusty at times.
Biggest money pit was a SAAB 96.
