Default Wrecked S70 for sale. Is it worth it?

Hi guys, I'm looking at a wrecked 2000 s70 turbo and was wondering if its worth repairing.. Needs two front fenders, bumper, bumper support, core support etc. Also needs frame repair in the front on both sides. Starts and runs fine. 110k miles and rest of car is pretty mint. I can prolly get it around $500. Shop estimated damage at $5300..
Advice?

Make sure that the car hasn't been written off.
How bad is the frame damage?
Did the air bags deploy?

Pictures may be helpful...

I don't know... with the major mechanical problems your car has I think that $15.00 is a little expensive. You would have to sweeten the deal some how for it to be worth it, free delivery maybe?

You're awfully close to the value of the car. That sounds like a severe enough wreck to cause lots of little problems for a while, maybe some big ones too. Low miles but the car is older now and they start having even more 'little problems" at this age.I would pass personally.

NOTE TO ALL WHO READS THIS: IMO!!! Any 10 year old car that has damage estimated beyond it's dealer retail value is not worth $1 more than the parts you need off of it. So, if you have a car that you are keeping, and you need a donor car, and you find a wrecked car that you can use parts off of, say you need a drivers seat, and a good used drivers seat would cost you $200, the donor car is only worth $200. On the other hand, if you are considering purchasing the car to fix and drive as a daily driver (dd), it's only worth what the junk yard would pay for it. That would be between $250 and $350.

I feel the same way. I offered about $350 for it. Air bags did not deploy. If I start taking the car apart and find more extensive damage, I could always part it out for much more than $350. I am waiting on their response to my offer....

You're probably right. Waiting on some estimates tomorrow. If they are too high hell I might even pay you $15 to take it. Its got one brand new tire if that helps!

I agree completely... unless the condition or mileage are otherwise exceptional, these cars are easy enough to find in road-worthy condition that there is no reason to buy a rescue car that might find you putting in more money than it's worth.

The owner wants around $400. The interior is near mint. It starts, runs, and goes into gear. The rest of the car is in almost mint condition as well along with new tires. I think I will jump on this one and if its unrepairable, I will part it out or resell it.

I always base my decision to buy a parts car on how many parts I realistically think I can use off of it, or sell to recoup the cost of the car. I like to buy parts cars, take the parts I need off it, and sell other parts on Ebay and recoup the total cost of the car and a bit of my time for parting it out.

Example: I bought a V70 GLT with an annihilated front end. Guy wanted $500 for it. I offered $300, as it sat. After a few days of thought, he sold it to me for the offered price. I immediately took the cherry Third row seat and seat belt mounts and hardware and had it installed in my V70 GLT. Now, I can haul two more kids in my good V70. That right there was worth the $300 bucks based off of salvage prices and current prices on Ebay for the seat. Car already paid for itself. Grabbed the visors for the wife's S70, seeing as the color matched. Used the CD player for her car, as all of her lights were dead in her existing radio. Once call to a dealer got me the codes to enable it. I grabbed the Turbo off of it for obvious reasons. Grabbed the ABS module, Leather driver seat was better than mine ,etc. Sold some parts on Ebay, then offed the rest of the car to a yard for $75.00 scrap.

By the time it was done, I fixed a ton of stuff on my cars, stocked the garage with valuable spare parts, and made money on the deal.

Parts cars ARE ALWAYS the way to go. (Assuming you have the flat bed to haul them).

The last one I purchased I got about $500 worth of parts for my car, put $300 into it, sold it for $1,200 (I paid $500 for it). So, it turned a profit and it will probably run for the college kid that got it for years.

My S70 is a rebuilt salvage car. I bought it from a salvage yard about 4 years ago for $1200 with 98k miles. It had no structural damage and the airbags hadn't deployed. I replaced the core support, radiator, condenser, both headlights, the grille, the right fender, the hood, right fender liner, and a few assorted other small parts. I had to cut out and weld a small section of the upper fender support that had crumpled. I invested about $1,000 additional in parts, plus $200 to have the hood painted (I found a matching fender... one place where black is a good color to have, it's easy to match right) I did the work myself. I've had the car now for 4 years and 50,000 miles, and I'd do this over again in a minute. Sure, if I ever sell it, the rebuilt salvage title will affect things, but it'll be a long time before I ever do that, and rebuilt titles don't have as much effect on the value of 16 year old cars with 220,000 miles on them (theoretical time in which I might sell the car!) as they do 4 year old cars with 50,000 miles. My dad and I are currently working on a 2000 S70 GLT-SE that he bought wrecked. (he has always loved my car and wanted one for himself) So if you can do the work yourself... get it. If not, and you actually have to PAY 5,300 to have it done, stay away. On the other hand, there ARE places that do inexpensive body work... it all depends on what you want out of the car.
