hi tech , sorry to hi jack the thread , my car is a 2001 2.0T Volvo S80, I suddenly have a weird noise when accelerating or whenever i put my foot down all the way, its like as if someone installed an after market exhaust but only it comes from the engine bay, I hear the turbo whistle which is fine, but suddenly the whole rough sound whenever I try to speed is new. I also parked the car and revved when the gear is in P and N, and I still get that noise between 4000-5000 rpm. Its not the turbo hissing noise, its a more crude more like something from a Rotary engine revving noise. No CEL , car recently had new belts including timing belt and oil pan o ring replacement done.

any ideas?

Are the engine mounts all good?

All engine mounts are new including the one on the side and top and the bottom two. Its only doing that Sports Car like noise between 4000-6000 rpm in brisk accelerating. Tried with gear box in N and P and also drove it in different ways, every time whenever I put the pedal down and the car revs its doing that sound. Could it be a leak in the exhaust manifold? but why would a leak in the manifold only come during a certain rpm band. Do you think it could be the turbo? but if its the turbo the car wont be making the hissing noise and would loose power drastically. so far

Gear Shift OK
CEL NO
Power in different rpm Bands OK
Turbo Hissing Noise OK
Electrical Functions OK

Noise existing even in P or N in gear box

But the terrible noise as if there is a blown exhaust when accelerating or revving between 4000-6000 rpm, it also happens only when doing brisk acceleration , almost non existing noise when driving a little slowly and not letting the rpm cross 3000 at anytime. its coming from the left side when standing in front of the engine.

Did it start happening after the new mounts were installed?
If so check where the steering column goes through the floor.
There is a metal collar that is supposed to be over the shaft and inside the rubber boot.
Sometimes when they do mounts and mess with subframe it will pop the collar out and allow the engine noise inside the car.

no changed the mounts about 2 months ago. The sound happened today when I put my foot down on a green light to speed, the car just suddenly felt like something got loose and started making the noise. First I thought the turbo is not kicking and thats where the noise is coming from. But then I clearly heard and felt the turbo was ok, so far no lag of power, but it does not feel right when I try to speed or put my foot down. Could it be the timing belt tensioner ? I was reading someone else posted something similar....

well the sound is there when you pop the hood and i had someone rev the engine, and that specific motor/exhaust like noise appears when revving between 4000-6000 rpm. Its not a noise with insulation related issue , I mean its like a rumble like second engine starting when pushing the rev.

Yes but was the noise there under the hood before?
Maybe it was there and you just never heard it under there?
That's why I said to check the collar if it popped out the noise might have always been there but you just hear it now.

From there not sure what to suggest next without hearing it for myself.

it is possible but unlikely, I revved last night also and there was no noise in similar conditions. If they had popped the cover during mounting install, wouldnt I be having the noise last two months since the install of the engine mounts?

I hope its just that what you are saying. Sounds simple and inexpensive rather than timing belt tensioner replacement or turbo replacement ! Will update you tomorrow. So you are sort of ruling out timing belt tensioner ?

Not 100% you can still check it as well. But if it is new I doubt it but it is still possible.
