hey everyone im new to this forum and im looking for some help!
i recently bought a 2002 Volvo S80 T-6 with a few minor problems.... fixed it up and on my way to get an inspection sticker the srs light came on.

i went to a volvo specialist(not dealer i had many problems with dealers when taking my benz to them so thats my last resort) anyways he scanned the codes and it said "front left air bag: resistance too high"
this was an intermittent code and he tried deleting it but it came right back up.... (unlike the dealer he didnt charge me. even if he did it would be 75 bucks cheaper, so hes a very nice guy)

anyone run into a problem like this??? im thinking it could be the clock spring but in most cases if thats it the horn wouldnt work either. right????
any ideas or tests i could run to narrow this problem???

 

Sounds like the airbag possibly. Volvo has resistors that are special tools that plug in place of the airbag and simulate the correct ohms and if the code clears, you know the drill. They are easy to replace if needed.

if its the turbo leaking that happens on all volvo turbos im not too worried i double checked everything and they seem to be good....

the guy i bought it from was scared because the engine was sputtering...
i bought a coil, problem fixed. also changed the timing belt just so i have nothing to worry about later. and id say for the price its a pretty sweet car..

anyone happen to have alldata and can check how much resistance theres supposed to be on airbags???

 

Short answer:

The wire under the middle of the driver's seat broke near a zip tie. Maybe due to catching on something...

All it would have required was to remove the seat, flip it over, and solder the wires back together, along with some shrink tubing.

In my case, I went ahead and bought a used airbag on eBay. I drove myself crazy for a bit because the original airbag, and the eBay airbag, measured infinite resistance at the connector. This didn't make sense for the eBay one, since the steering wheel airbag measures about 2 to 5 ohms. I thought I'd bought a dud. So I bought a second. Same thing.

Unlikely to have three duds.

So I pulled the big connector under the driver's seat, plugged in one of my eBay airbags and was able to get the airbag warning to shut off.

So I pulled the seat, pulled the upper skin, replaced the airbag... and while routing the new wire, found the old one severed. I could have saved myself about an hour if I'd looked for that before pulling the leather. My understanding is that these wires usually break near the hinge, which would require pulling the leather to get at anyway.

So - the lesson learned is to look closer under the seat to see if your broken wire is in the 'easy place' to fix.

This was on a 2002 S60.
