I've got a knocking noise that seems to come from somewhere under the car on the passenger side when I go over bumps or take turns fast. It sounds like metal to metal, but I have no idea what it can be. Is there anyone who has got any ideas what it can be?

Probably your rear subframe bushings. Do you also notice it while coming in and out of a driveway or parking spot? It's common on that year. Give me a bit to dig up the part numbers, but repair consisted of putting the car on ramps (or jackstands) and removing the rear subframe bolts while supporting the subframe with a jack. Then you just lower the subframe about 1"-1.5" and place some large o-rings in the bushings. Install new subframe bolts and torque to 90ft/lbs.

You will need two o-rings and two bolts.
I think it was around $26 for everything and installation took about 25 minutes.

For what it's worth, I had a similar knocking noise that was significantly pronounced at lower speeds and while driving over uneven pavement. My mechanic found the front passenger strut mount loose and the strut leaking. I had him replace both struts and mounts and the noise has gone away. I also sensed a slight laterally instability at freeway speeds that may have been due to the loose strut mount. This went away after the repair.

I have a 2002 S-80 non-turbo with approximately 130k miles.. I replaced pretty much all the front end parts around 100k in an effort to chase down clunks. I have done the control arms twice- first set was aftermarket from FCP and the bushing wore out in 10k miles, so I sent them back and got a set of Volvo OEM control arms. They are much better. I have had to replace one of the sway bar links. I replaced the Struts, Strut bearings (2x- first were crappy and bound and popped when you turned). Strut bushings 2x - again- aftermarket only lasted a few miles. I used Volvo OEM on the second set- no issues yet. I have replaced the right lower engine mount- mine was metal on metal. Replaced the upper torque mount. In related matters, both drive shafts have been replaced, as well as both front wheel bearings. New brake rotors and pads (high quality ceramic). While these did effect repairs that were needed and eliminated a lot of the rattles, pops and groans, I still have some left to eliminate, and these new ones are pretty bad- very loud.
I purchased the IPD kit with the subframe bushing inserts, as well as the plastic washers that go between the metal parts. I also got the Volvo OEM orings that go between the rear subframe busing and the frame. Today I install all of the above to hopefully eliminate the worst kind of popping, and honestly, I hear no difference. Still popping.
About all that is left to do is the lower engine torque mount and the transmission to subframe mounts. Other than that, I suspect I wold have to go back to some of the things already replaced. Talk about frustrating!
