Default 2007 S80 v8 transmission swap

After considering for week, I pulled trigger and bought 2007 S80 V8 in good condition (inside & outside) but with transmission problem (price was good and I calculated it before purchase). When I turn on car, it seems OK but after 15-20 min I am getting all kind of issues (hard bang from 'N' to 'R', hard downshifting - almost engine is going get out from hood,...). The transmission code is '06K'.

Based what I see, the change just transmission fluid would be 'band aid' and on long run, I'd be posting similar question after a few months....I made decision to fix transmission and whatever it takes with it.

One option is replace 'valve body' with updated one. The other option to buy used transmission and I am wondering how to find out which one is going fit.

The question: what is the latest transmission what it could be added to car without any modification, tweaking etc. Is it year 2010 or ..?

Btw, I am new user (I have also 2007 XC70).

Interesting question. The 2007 is considered a second generation car so I'd guess you have the Aisin TF-80SC six speed automatic. Later years got the Aisin TG-81SC (eight speed auto in the same form factor as the six speed). The concern I'd have is the transmission computers would be different and you'd need to research how they comunicate to the ECU and ABS. My guess is not very well. Given the TF-80SC is modern transmission, its 6 speeds should be plenty for a V8. What I'd do is start with the drain fill concept but drop the pan to inspect for any debris (or filter the fluid ). If there's nothing chunky showing up, the drain/fill will likely reduce the shifting flares . Since each drain/fill only gets about 60%, you'd want to buy a case of 12 quarts and do 3 drain fill cycles (running the car to circulate between drains). Make sure you use the correct fluid per the owners manual and follow the protocol for measuring to the correct fluid level. Not sure if your car has a transmission dipstick or not - if not, you'd want to google or check Youtube for how to fill a transmission with an overflow device.

I used this as my reference

S80 series Model Page - year by year

It seems same transmission from design point of view - it is different question about software running that transmission but I understand that if you put transmission (ie 2007 vs 2010), they are identical. So far, I think any transmission up to year 2010 should work.

As for drain fluid, I am wondering how is dealer doing - I assume they are running transmission through cooler until get desired color. The method with adding/draining fluid multiple times could be good for doing at home. My concern is that I am going need perform some fix (valve body) on transmission anyway.

In this moment, car is still in my garage and once I find answer about transmission, I am going do it.

I am surprised that I come to this idea about transmission swap and nobody do it in past.

Correct, if it does come down to replacing the transmission, the 2007 to 2010s are interchange years where the TF-80SC is the same. I don't think your tranny is toast however as these models were known to be sensitive to transmission fluid to the point some owners recommend fluid changes every 30K miles.

I found it as well ...I am planing perform same steps ...It seems straightforward ...As for interval, I'd do it every 60k miles (doing same on 2007 XC70 and it is working great so far).
