About to purchase a 2002 S80 T6
I am seriously considering purchasing a 2002 S80 T6 w/ 48,200 miles for $20,999. The car rides well and has all the options I want plus a DVD player. I have never owned a Volvo before.
Please let me know, what the potential trouble areas are for this car and what s/I really check out?
Also, what are the maintenance schedules for big items such as timing belt, etc...
Thanks,
Shokwaves

Thanks Tech..
I rec'd the service history today.
The dealer has done the following at 48K miles.
-4 wheel alignment
-new sway bar links both in front
-new front brakes.
The dealer wants $20K...it will need new tires soon. Any advice on bargaining w/these guys. How common are transmission troubles? S/I go for the extended warranty??
Regards,
Alan

Tech is absolutely correct. They are hit and miss - an unknown blank guess. Fortunately, many problems were fixed by 2002 and the T6 is an excellent choice. However, the ETM may need replacement. I am sure you will enjoy that car very much and it does not have too many miles for a recent model. $20K seems reasonable although just a bit pricey. Try negotiating the price down to $18 and it will be an excellent purchase!

RE: About to purchase a 2002 S80 T6
Hi Shock,
I picked up my 2002 T-6 on Friday 3 weeks ago.
I purchased it because I was returning on lease a 2001 T-6 with 66K. Throughout the 4 years, I replaced the radio (waranty), a headlamp (warranty), the squeaky sunroof molding (warranty), the tires, and the brakes.
Other than that, the car performed flawlessly, and still had great zip. That is why I chose another one.
I think you may be paying too much though. My new one has 10K on it and I paid $24,000. It drives beautifully. I also got 36 months of bumper-to-bumper left. I had no probs with the tranny.
Enjoy.

Are the tires on it stock? That's an awful lot of miles for stock tires. I got the BF Goodrich traction T/A's, for about 110 a piece. The stock tires on my car were the Michelin HX MXM4's which were goin for about 150 a piece. The tires for this car are not cheap, but at the same time you don't want really cheap ones because the S80 has some excellent handling capabilities. Is it AWD? If so, then don't forget that if you need to replace one tire, you probably need to replace all of them.

I heard the same thing.
They are fially redesigning the s-80 and it is supposed to be quite a vehicle.
It's about time. It has been the same model for 7 years.
In fact, I almost bought an Avalon last month. That would have broken my string of 4 Volvos. I decided to get the used one and wait it out a year or two.
I did test drive the M-35 from Infinity. Pretty sweet, but about $50K the way I liked it.
