Default abs question

Hi guys I just bought a used 2000 volvo s80 and the guy I bought it from said the only thing wrong is that the ABS module needs to be replaced. Now my question is, is this an easy thing to do myself? I've never done anything like this before. and how much would this be to get a new one?

also while I wanted to get new floor mats as well, any suggestions?

Thanks so much

I am trying to find out the same information as my ABS light is on etc. I have heard the part is up to $1000 and that it may need to be programmed by the dealer on top of that. I do not know if you can use a used one or not, but if you can I do not understand why these would not just be pre-programmed when you purchase them.

A couple of notes regarding the ABS module.

I have seen them available online, as refurbished units with a 5 year warranty for less than $120. You have to turn in your defective unit (core) for that price.

Usually, the sites advertising the refurb units have tutorials on how to remove and replace the unit. Google something like Volvo ABS Module Repair.

You do need an unusual tool to remove and replace the unit. It is a Torx E5 tip. They used to be available at Sears, but I haven't seen them there in a while. Harbor Freight *may* have them as part of a set. Otherwise you'll have to order it online.

You should have some mechanical skills - nothing extraordinary - but, nonetheless, competent. If you read the online tutorials, you should be able to assess your (or your friend's) ability to undertake the project.

Finally, if you're competent with electronics, and know how to solder, check out this link to a post. https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-...-repair-15635/

Good luck and report back.

Thanks for the information. I was all gung ho and ready to go to pull my old unit out and take it apart and try re-soldering all the points mentioned. Unfortunately I forgot to mention that my S80 is a 2002. From all the sites I have located, the module on this vehicle is non-repairable, and the best I can figure, new would cost approx. $1000. Does anyone know if a used part would work? Maybe I could find one at a pick-n-pull or something.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

E5 socket on a 1/4" drive with extension... and some patience.

Two places to have yours rebuilt:

BBA
Modulemaster

I've used module master. Pulled mine, sent, fixed, returned. You can drive around with it on. Put a plastic bag over the valves...

Here you can find a good set of directions for 99-01 year model and you can buy the tool you need from him as well.

He only has removal directions for the above model years but states he can rebuild 99 and newer models.

Did a good job on mine. He rebuilt it and sent it back within a day or two after he received it.

Thank you for the tip. I have already emailed him and the response I received was my unit is not repairable and I need to get a new one.
