Aftermarket car audio @ S80 t6, 2001
I replaced an original Volvo audio system from my S80, 2001 by the Kenwood KDS 791. Nice and well designed receiver with the possibility to get external HD via USB port. It was professionally installed at the car stereo workshop. After that the problems began. First, I had to go to the dealership to reset signal lights, but this was just the beginning. The dealership told me that sometimes the aftermarket car CD does not communicate properly with the processor, and the signal lights get pop up from time to time. He was right! Now, when I start the car all lights are off, but in 5-10 sec "brakes failure" (red triangle), ABS, STC go on, cruise control stop working, and two messenges appears. When i do not pay attention to these messenges and lights (which is hard), in about 10-15 min all lights are off except STC, and cruise control would not work as well. Usually I park and do a reset (position 1, then 2, odometer ****, etc.). It works for 1 or 2 starts of the engine then it begins again. Volvo dealership recommended me to replace almost everything including a CD that would cost me about 5.5 g, but i do not believe this is the only option. Please help!

The people at the Dealership are a BUNCH of AS* *****.
They should have told you from the begining all they had to do was download software to remove the factory radio and that should fix all the problems you are having.
But you could also have a bad ABS module.
Which would keep the ABS and STC lights on most of the time. Sometimes you might also lose the speedoif the ABS module is bad.

Thanks for the message! Totally agree about a bunch of AS****.
It is possible that ABS module needs to be replaced, but ALL these problems started after i installed this f.. CD! What kind of software is this that needs to be downloaded? Can anyone do that or just Volvo? Hope it is not too late to download it...

Just Volvo.
It is software to remove the factory radio function.
The factory radio is a module in a network of the car. When you remove it without telling the other computers in the car is it missing all these problems come up.
They can download the software to remove the factory radio as a module.
That should fix most of the problems.

That is a good idea to swich dealership if you have at least 2 Volvo authorised, unfortunately at Edmonton there is only one and it sucks. Hope Canadian Tire is a bit better.

This unit was installed at the professional car audio shop. They ordered all parts to fit this CD receiver to your car model, it took about a week, and then you just wait about 1.5 hours and you have it installed.
There are few web-stores that sell this unit specifically to your car model
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-G4MqUK2...p?i=113KDCX791
http://www.cardomain.com/item/KENKDC...m=product_feed
Totally it costed me about $300 with installation.

I made an appointment to Volvo for this Thursday to istall a software you recommended. They had no idea that such way of fixing problem exists. Also, VADIS for them was totally new concept . Anyway, I referred to your recommendations, gave them a part number and they agreed to install this part. Right now, considering their total ignorance, I am just worried about the procedure of installation. Would you give me some sort of step-by-step recommendation how to install it? It should be more fool-proof than for normal professionals, because these ignorant bastards from Volvo might screw it up.

They should know atleast how to do a software download.
Because on these cars anytime a major part is replaced they have to do a software download.
They will hook the computer to the car.
Then order the software by part#.
Then download it into the car.
The system should then clear all the codes in the car then it will be done.

Would be interested to know the results of this one when it's done police_44. I was starting to give up hope about putting in an aftermarket system to the car.
Incidentally how does this work with the factory sounds inputs (i.e. amp etc. etc.). I assume it's just a straight plug into existing wiring and you should get the same audio quality that you get out of the Volvo system? I have a HU-801.

I've just returned from the Volvo dealership. They downloaded the radio removal software, said "Everything is OK", chrged me for this $120, but it did not solve the problem: the signal lights ABS, STC, and Break Failure Stop ASAP went on again almost immediately after I started my car and left Volvo dealership . Soooo, the problem is most likely in the ABS module that needs to be replaced. I will combine this replacement with the 106,000 miles service package, which is just round the corner. What drives me mad in this strange story is the fact that ABS and Brake Failure signal lights usually go off in 5-10 minutes and I am not sure if the ABS replacement (about $1200) would really solve it.

Any suggestions what REALLY need to be fixed in the 106,000 service package? Thanks.

Was your timing belt replaced as of yet?
Volvo says 105k but I would replace at 70k
As for the ABS module remove it your self and send it to this guy.
It is around $100.00 to get it rebuilt.

No, I haven't replece T-belt yet. And it is about time, 101K miles. What Dos and Don'ts would you suggest when changing T-belt?
Thanks for the link, it is interesting option, because Volvo would charge me about $1500 for ABS. I will definitely contact the guy and see what we can do. Thanks, Tech.

Its not all that bad.
Have you done a timing belt before?
The mechanical tensioner might throw you for a loop when you first read how to do it.
But once you have done it once or twice then you will get it.
