Aftermarket Stereo in 2000 S80

Aftermarket Stereo in 2000 S80
Over the weekend I was able to take out the factory radio, take that apart, get the 4 CD's out, and re-assemble all of it. To test it I used a CD I didn't care about and the changer will not play it and will not spit it back out so I guess the CD player/changer is just dead.
My question is:
Will an aftermarket stereo play nicely with the rest of the car's electronics assuming that the proper wiring harness adapter's are used ?
Apparently the car has some sort of alarm from built in - will that still work?
I'm assuming the steering wheel controls will no longer work but that is no big deal. More concerned with other things I don't even know about being disabled or malfunctioning.

yes you can put an aftermarket cd player in your car. but if you get a single din cd player you will have a big open space that looks horrible. my advice is to get a double din it may be a little more expensive but it will look alot better in the end. for the steering wheel controls you would have to get an interface to connect the new headunit.

Be careful about replacing the factory radio. Many of the car's communications systems are routed through the head unit (why I don't know), and if it is removed the car will freak. My S80 did and I lost a TCM, CEM and ETM all in one shot ($3500 out the door). Took me months to figure out the root cause. Check with the dealership to ensure that it can be done on your model year. There is a software update on some of the vehicles to remove the factory head unit from the loop that must be performed before you actually take it out.
Good luck!

I just got the aftermarket unit installed Fri and so far no issues. Picked up a double din Kenwood unit. Volvo actually makes a double-din adapter for aftermarket equipment which I picked up on ebay prior to the install. The installer said it is better than other kits he has used however it did require a fair amount of modification to get a good look out of it. I'll try and post some pics when I get a chance.

No programming and stock speakers are fine.
A pop up/fold out screen would come up right in front of the vents :-(
I need to take night pics since the *****/screen/buttons can all be set to different colors. Right now I've got mostly green with orange accents which blends in well with the OEM colors on the rest of the dash/controls.
So far I'm really liking the ability to stick a jump drive in the usb port on the front and play directly off that. Recent trip to Chicago and back (~5.5hrs each way) and a 4gb jump drive had more than enough tunes on it. Beats the old days of carrying a massive tape case around...
