Default Check Engine Light

Hello

My check engine light came on and I paid $89.00 to a Volvo repair place to read the codes.
I was told I needed a new computer for my 2002 S 80 2.9 Volvo. When my car is in park, the engine(RPMs) surges up and down.

Here are the codes:
ECM-3513 Misfire Cylinder 1. Emiisions impact/cata
ECM-3523 Misfire Cylinder 2. Emiisions impact/cata
ECM-3533 Misfire Cylinder 3. Emiisions impact/cata
ECM-3543 Misfire Cylinder 4. Emiisions impact/cata
ECM-3553 Misfire Cylinder 5. Emiisions impact/cata

ECM-261A Long-term fuel trim. Upper limit
ECM-262A Long-term fuel trim. Upper limit
ECM-271A Adaptive Lambda control, bank 2 upper limit
ECM-272A Adaptive Lambda control, bank 2 upper limit
ECM-3503 Misfire, at least one cylinder

All in Sympton Area 28....

My engine is B6294S2
Transmission is 4T65EV
Chassis is 261486

Does someone have a second opinion please. Also, as anyone had a issue like this?

Thanks

IF you do need a computer check with BBA REMAN as they can rebuild it a lot cheaper than you can buy one They wanted around 425.00 to rebuild one for us on a Maxima we got it done somwhere in Texas for 300. Will see if I can find the bill and let you know By the way that is what our Maxima was doing We also had to replace the idle air control value as the repair shop said when they IACgos bad it burns the compand it would do no good to fix one without the other.

Thanks diehardgator1. I will locate a place here in Atlanta Ga that rebuilds comps. I will also have them check the IAC value.

Thanks Again.

No you cannot.

Did you replace the plugs and coils yet?

If not I would start there.

They told you, that you needed a new computer? Was this a dealer? or just an aftermarket place? It sounds to be like what tech said, you need to start with checking the plugs/coils, those could cause everysingle one of those DTC's

I agree with the previouse 2 posts. none of that has ever indicated to me that the vehicle would need a new ecm. If you havent had any major services done I would start by chenging the plug....use volvo plugs. If that didnt get rid of the misfre codes then I would look at the coil packs. If the vehicle is surging up and down it is possible that it has a mass air flow sensor problem, but most likely it might have a problem with the ETM (electronic throttle module)...they have always had pretty major issues. Also, that etm is under warranty for 200,000 miles. But, dealers are extremely limited to when they can warranty and change one. There4 has to be certain codes in the system, such as a throttle potentiometer codes, and then fail/pass some tests. Hope some of this helps!

I would start with the plugs like the others said. Those codes they pulled up are not usually ETM related. Ecm 261A is typically a MAF sensor.

well i know that there is a part that was replaced when i had my engine overhauled, and the volvo dealer said that if my RPM's started surging while at an idle or in park to come back and they will replace it. Since they have been having a problem with the part in S80's. I forget the part name, but i do know that the part has a 200,000 mile warranty on it. so i run it by your dealer to see if there are any open recalls.

That part is called the electronic throttle body.
