Default cold start problem

Hi all,

I'm new to the sight. I just bought a 1999 S80 T6 and have a problem when cold starting the car. When I start the car it runs really rough, kind of surging, and almost stalls. It only lasts for a few minsthen runs normal. There are no DTC's. Has anyone expirienced this?

Thanks,
Bill

Welcome to the forum.

I am moving this to the S80 section where more S80 owners may see it.

Do you smell gas by the R/R of the car?

I have not noticed a gas smell but I have not stood behind either. I'll go behind the car at next cold start and smell.

Thanks,
Bill

You need to have the fuel pressure and rest pressure tested.
Or also do you ever see a message in the window when it won't start?
Do you have a spare key you can use for now?

Fuel pressure is good. No spare key. I did have several codes P1172 P1182 and P1238. I replaced the bank 1 O2 sensor 1, bank 2 sensor1was also replaced recently, and the MAF sensors yesterday and the only code that comes back is the boost pressure sensor circuit A low. What's odd to me is that the car has more power with this code active. ? This morninr I had the same cold start problem. It only happens when the car has cooled down and sat for a long time. Engine service urgent does appear in the window after the cold start problem but it doesn't throw a code.

No. It does start but surges. The idle goes from 3k to 8k and if I give it gas, it takes a few sec's before it reves up. When the rpm's are up, 2.5-3.5k, it is smooth. If I let off the gas it drops down and runs rough. I can put it in gear and drive it and it clears out.Does it have a cold start injector?

Thanks,
Bill

No it doesn't have a cold start injector.
Has the throttle body been cleaned lately?

Yes, with a 3 step fuel induction kit also. Just drove the car and the P1172 and P1182 codes came back. Air fuel metering codes. ?

That is usually a bad Mass Flow.

1172 rotor control.
1182 fuel shutoff soleniod circuit.

Not sure what they mean though they are weird ones. I would need to see the Volvo codes to help more.

I just went out to start the car. I turned the key to on but not starting it, let it sit there for 30 seconds. Turned the key to off, pushed the pedal one time, turned the key to on for 15 seconds and for the first time it started normally. The check engine light also went off. Now I'm even more baffled. This thing is screwing with me. lol. I own a repair shop in Marietta Ga. When I get there in the morning I will pull the codes if they come back.

P1172 = ECM-261A fuel adaption bank 1
P1182 = ECM-271A " " 2

Both upstream O2 sensors and the mass air flow sensor are new. ? It's nickle diming me to death.

Problem solved. I found a crack in the Intake pipe at the throttle body. The codes have not come back and the car has much more power. I bet I'll get better gas mileage also. Thanks for your help.
