Default Do I need to replace a fuel overflow canister?

Just got off the phone with the mechanic. He said I need a fuel overflow canister, a shutoff valve and a piece of hose. That will cost me $1200 on a 2000 S80 with 153,000 miles worth around $3300 blue book.

Besides the check engine light being on do I REALLY need to do this work and what will happen if I don't?

Thanks.
