I have an S80 T6 (1999)which tends to be a bit of a trouble child. Every few months it starts up something new. Presently it's decided that it will or won't leak some oil (and I can't figure out where the heck it's coming from) and also the recalled ETM has started to play up (might call Volvo to see if a warranty still covers it as I was lead to believe there was an 8 - 10 year warranty on the replaced part).

Anyway it got me thinking (because it doesn't look like I can sell the car - because no-one wants it) about an engine replacement. This car is a problem child (even the regular service shop said that - bit concerning actually) and has the 2.8L Twin Turbo (unsure of engine model number). Is it possible to swap out this engine with something like a 2.5T from a later model S80 (like the 2000)? If it is, can it be mated to the existing gearbox and would it need to have wiring changed etc. etc.?

Is there another engine that would be a straight swap for the S80 T6 and could mate to the existing gearbox? I would like to pretty much do a "drop-in" and run so of job and not necessarily have to change everything. Any advice would be useful.

 

T5 takes another transaxle, motor mounts, ECU, exhaust, intercooler, etc... you would end up replacing the entire engine compartment; mechanical + electrical.

 

IMO it wouldn't be worthwhile. You'd be better off just fixing what you've got or dumping it and buying a different car.
