I was told by the auto parts store that I needed a fuel pressure sensor and watched many videos on how to replace one. However, when I look at my engine, I’m not sore where it’s at. I have this blue stopper thing in place of when I believe the sensor goes. I have a 2004 Volvo S80. Please see picture. Am I missing one?

 

The blue part is a plastic valve stem cover. Same as a tire valve cover. That's where a fuel pressure gauge is connected. The fuel pressure sensor is installed (on engines that have them) on one end of the fuel rail - So if you don't have a pressure sensor (as pictured below) mounted on either end of the fuel rail - your engine does not require one and the fuel pump runs at full speed all the time. Why do your want to replace it (a part that your car does not have)?

 

Hi and thank you for getting back to me. I took my car in yesterday to an auto parts store and an associate there placed a computer tester on my car and then told me I needed to order the part su13542 fuel inj. They do not have the part and could get it within a week. So, I went home and looked it up on the Internet and saw the part. It’s the exact same one that you sent me in the picture. Then, I went online and started watching videos on how to replace it so I went down to my car and I noticed that I didn’t even have one. So I started getting confused. Yesterday morning when I started the car, it started almost lunging and making a puttering popping sound. It drives fine. And the engine light came on. So I thought I’d come to this site and see what it could be and why I couldn’t find the part in my engine that the auto parts store told me I should order.

 

A stored self diagnostic trouble code - does not mean a part (or sensor) is bad. It means one of the control units does not like the signal from a part (or sensor). You need to have the car diagnosed rather than replacing parts by code. That can be very frustrating and expensive replacing parts that you don't need.

Many Volvo engines do have a fuel pressure sensor - but not all of them.

 

I am the original owner of a 2008 S80 with 220,000 miles. The fuel rail sensor code has tripped countless times. The dealership looked at it after the first occurrence and said not to bother with it. The check engine light later goes out on its own to come back on some months later with the same code. The car performs fine, usually. On rare occasions the power will drop off while accelerating onto an interstate on ramp. I fully release the accelerator and gently press it again without further issue. That has been my experience. Yours may vary.

 

Hi All, I wanted to thank you very much for all the responses. I ended up calling my Volvo mechanic back home and he told me to try and add some:

Techron Fuel Injector Cleaner right into the gasoline.

and thus far, that seems to do the trick. I’ll let you know if it doesn’t. Once again, thank you for all the responses.
