I've not been able to find anything that relates to my problem so far. My mother's 2003 S80 is making a grinding sound when turning the starter over. It almost sounds like when someone turns the starter over when the car is already running. The car has a hard time starting, but will start and the reduced engine performance light comes on for a minute or so then goes off. I've replaced the starter so far, no change. Any ideas ?

 

Grinding sounds can come from a power steering pump going bad, ac compressor, alternator or TIMING BELT. Check asap remove the cover front the left side of the engine and check the belt and the tensioners and idlers. Also check oil level.
