My dad’s 2004 S80 has a problem where the left lowbeam bulb flickers every few minutes. Besides this problem, I notice that about 4 seconds after I turn on the lights, there is some sort of motor that aims them way to low, reducing visibility by a lot - and causing a headlight bulb failure message to appear. Does anyone know if I can simply swap out the original bulbs for LEDs? Would this throw a computer error? And can someone please confirm if this model uses H7 bulbs for low beam?
Do you have the Xenon bulbs in the low beam position? A D2R bulb instead of a H7? (2 types of headlamp assemblies are possible - but H7's usually don't flicker) If Xenon the D2R bulb moves up and down for high and low beam. The movement that you see is normal when first started. If still aimed too low, there is a manual adjustment.
The flickering (if Xenon) may be caused by a bad connection, ballast or a bulb. Swap left to right to determine which expensive part to replace. A Zenon bulb uses a ballast - there's no wire filament in the bulb - just gasses that produce the light. The ballast is #7 on the diagram, and there is a Chassis number break.
And if you use LEDs you will get a bulb out warning.
