Well we have a 2002 S80, we bought about a month ago.
the exhaust needs some help, the tailpipe fell off, and of course it has the bracket on the end, and the middle brace is off too( i can get online).

my question is, i am hesitent on spending 225 bucks min. on a new muffler, is there a less expensive option?? i would like to try and do myself if possible.
the muffler is not loud, so i think it is still good.

 

Go to an exhaust shop and have them put new hangers on. Couldn't be more than 100 bucks.

 

i found a muffler at partsgeek for 225, will have local shop install, i purchased a hanger from ipd, so we are all good

 

I'm sorry you had to spend that much since you were hesitant. May I suggest you save the reciept for the muffler and ask the exhaust shop to put the car up on the lift and make suggestions on whether something will be more cost effective

i was figuring going with the stock block muffler that is on it, are you saying that if a
muffler shop was willing, they could use a different style, less expensive??

 

There are very cheap universal 'sports' mufflers for less than 100 bucks. Flowmaster, flowtech, blah blah. Depends on your preferences. If you're into cars and upgrading and having a better sound, this could be a good replacement. From what you said in the original post, you need to do an exhaust overhaul anyway. My hanger is very rusted and what I was thinking of doing is from the cat-back: a performance muffler where the resonator would go and then piping the rest of the way back and getting dumped out behind the rear left wheel. If you are also looking for a quick fix, you could get one from a junkyard. And yes, normally an exhuast shop (unless he/she is a dick) will put the car up on a lift show you exactly what they will be doing. And they are "pros", they will no what will be the most cost effective, if that what you are looking for, I hope that makes sense.

 

yeh i went to a shop i have delt with in the past, and he did not seem to interested in putting in a non volvo muffler onit, but said he would put the one on that i buy, for 70 bucks, so now i have 320 bucks into just a muffler.
i am going to try your idea of a not too hot rod muffler, since it is a pretty fast car lol
see if another shop might be willing to work on it.
