Default Oil change on a 2000 S80 2.9

I'm new to this forum, and also new to Volvo's as far as owning one. I usually change my own oil and so I bought a filter wrench to fit the filter canister for my S80. However, I notice that when I buy a new filter it comes with a rubber gasket ring and the first time I went to put it on and replaced the oil and then started the engine there was oil leaking from the oil filter. I drained the oil and took the rubber gasket off and then tigthtened the filter canister good and tight. It still seems to leak just a little bit. Any suggestions on whether the gasket should be used and/or what filter type I should use?
Thanks!

The o-ring should go on the canister.
Also make sure you have it in the proper groove.
