Default Price vs reliability

I know early model S80s are known for having many issues, but I also know some work just fine. I came across a 2000 S80 2.9L with around 140,000 miles for only $5,400. The car looks very clean in the pictures, but I still don't know...Does anyone with a 2000 S80 recommend getting it? Is it worth the repairs if they come across in the future? It's hard not to consider a car with so many features at such a low price - for $5,400 you usually come across crappy hondas or old cars with clothe interiors and only 1 airbag...

Default RE: Price vs reliability

I have a 2000 S80 2.9L Non-Turbo. My wife and I love this car. We've had it for 2 years now and it only has 65,000 miles on it with no major repairs having been needed. The maintenance that has been done is the software update for the ETM, the front brakes, Transmission oil flush, suspension bushings, etc. The car runs great and we look forward to many more happy miles with it!

Just like you I had read the supposed "nightmare" stories about this year and model, but our car has been nothing short of perfection. I recommend this vehicle with the following caveat. I've identified a pattern on this forums: The folks that try to do their own work on this car end up doing more damage than good. Some of the members are actual mechanics and can handle the maintenance and such, but if you don't knowwhat you're doing, pony up the money and get the job done right. This is what I've done and I know it's saved me money in the end because my repairs are getting done RIGHT!

Default RE: Price vs reliability

Greetings,

First of all, check out any recalls that have been issued against the S80. If there are any, make sure to have them repaired at a Volvo dealer. Recalls MUST BE repaired by the dealers AT NO CHARGE TO CUSTOMERS, regardless of the age & mileage of the car.

Sometimes Master_pre's opinion does apply, that people try to fix problems on their own and end up worsening it. However, in my personal opinion, 80% (or more) of automotive-related problems, other than those caused by an accident, are due to the owners ignorance & neglect for scheduled maintenance, visual checks of fluids & leaks that do not take more than 10 minutes and you only need to do this once/week or so. Many people don't even read the owner's manual and that is the first place they fail to keep their cars in good condition.

Anyway, check the recalls, test drive it (check the engine, transmission, brakes & air conditioner as well as gauges & lights), take it to a Volvo dealer or a shop that specialises in Swedish/European makes for pre-purchase inspection. If you cannot do this, open the hood and check for fluid leaks or anything that looks unusual; you do not have to be a mechanic to recognise<
