I'm not sure how different the 01 is to an 08 but I used a large c-clamp to compress mine. Also is your brake reservoir cap off?

I believe the rear piston has to be rotated clockwise while compressing the piston. I had one of those square cage looking brake tools that a 3/8 extension and ratchet clip into. I had to find a side that was close to the 2 dimples in the piston and grind down the sides of my tool till it fit. It took quite a bit of pressure to get the piston to retreat. They make special tools for this purpose with interchangeable heads for different pistons. Harbor freight sells one set. Also a pneumatic tool is also available.
